It's an easy to read book but has a lot of information. Like they say dynamite in small packages. It gives a lot of information on spiritual fathership. Why I need to have a father, being humble and submissive to you father. There is a bible verse for references for every topic. I loved it.

Excellent and Insightful Look at Presidential Politics

All too often, Hunter Thompson's remarkable and vast journalistic production has been overwhelmed and deluded by his famous work, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It would seem that most Thompson readers fail to see that Thompson's works, far from being one esoteric drug opus, range the spectrum of popular cultre, politics, and to a great extent a large segment of American history.

One of his best and most illuminating books, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72, is written with the cutting commentary and breakneck pace so recognizable as Thompson. However, each comment and postulation is well researched and based on deep thought, even if enhanced by the occassional milky hit of Singapore Gray.

Thompson studies the 1972 Presidential election month by month, following both polls and candidates across the nation. Rather than see the election as a political institution, Thompson slices away the media fat and studies candidates, their motivations, and the varied behavior of the American constituency.

The author takes time to explore each candidate, although concentrating mostly on the Democratic Party, discussing their platforms on the major issues of the time: amnesty, the de-escalation of Vietnam, the civil rights movement, etc. and accurately and insightfully illustrates their place in not only the election, but in America during the early 1970's.

Thompson, having closely studied politics for innumberable years illustrates waves and trends throughout American politics, from 1964-72, with numerous and ultimately accurate predictions for the future.

Although a different work than Fear in Loathing in Las Vegas, a very interesting and personal look at American politics and Thompson the journalist. A must read for "politics junkies" as well as Thompson fans.

A no-holds-barred look at the American political scene

Although not as thrilling as Hell's Angels and not as profound as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, F+L: on the campaign trail '72 does offer a brilliant analysis of the frenzied, unpredictable nature of American politics. With the McGovern/Nixon presidential race as its focus, this book gives the reader an insider's unflinching view of a year out with the candidates as they crisscrossed the USA. Unfortunately, Thompson takes some of the transcribed dialogue sections a bit too far and the inclusion of many irrelevant details was not necessary. The book should have been properly edited and cut down by about 100-150 pages. But having said that, the word for word transcription of an interview with George McGovern near the end of the book is priceless! What insight! The last 20 pages or so - the "Editor's conversation" - is also very good. If any foreigners want an understanding of the American campaign process, THIS IS THE BOOK TO READ. From no one but Thompson will you get such a realistic account. Gonzo journalism at its twisted peak, perhaps. Excessive at times, but worth the time and effort. Thompson's writing is more penetrating and entertaining than that of any tradional political journalist, period. Hell, you've got to give this guy credit. He's an original! The "football conversation" with Richard Nixon in New Hampshire and the "Sheridan"/Jerry Rubin incident on Muskie's Florida train are both hilarious!

Rereading Hunter S. Thompson's speed & acid-addled account of the 1972 U.S. presidential campaign is a profoundly enlightening experience, especially in light of the creativity and innovation Thompson infused in his reinvention of political journalism that proved to be (and still is) way ahead of its time. Fear & Loathing 2016--simply substute Hillary R. Clinton for Richard M. Nixon (Thompson realized more forty years ago that "Democrat" and "Republican" were equivalent to "heads" or "tails" of the same all-consuming Washington beast). There is no McGovern (sorry Bernie), and Trump, who will win it all hands-down, is the kind of wildcard that only once-in-a-century political climate change can produce...so in a way this 2016 campaign shapes up to be one of the most insane in Amercan history. What a long, strange trip it's going to be. But let's be clear: Clinton=Nixon. It may be twisted, but it's true! Welcome to the Brave New America! And one final thought: Hunter would be disgusted by the pathetic commercial sell-out that "Rolling Stone" is today--retire the magazine--it's been dead for years now and it's still receiving a social security check. Burn the Stone...bury the charred corpse!

I received this book yesterday. I read this book from cover to cover yesterday. I recommend this book to anyone who thinks we live in a perfect world. I recommend this book to anyone that has ever had any struggles in this world. Ernie's story of his faith journey and his message that there is hope in God is very impactful!

I ordered this book as I am familiar with Ernie Johnson's story from the documentary on ESPN, and from the many nights I watch him on TNT with Shaq, Kenny and Sir Charles. I am a physician with dyslexia have not read many books cover to cover, but I read this book over the weekend while spending some time in the mountains. It is a great read with an even better message as well as a unique insight to the man behind one of the best sports shows on television. Ernie, I don't know if the feelings I had while reading your book can be considered a "blackberry" but I'm counting it as one in my life. I'm not quite a "believer" but your book and life has brought me a whole lot closer. Thank you for opening your life to me and others like me, and I know my family will benefit from what I learned in your book. My sister has handicaps, and I wouldn't trade her for anything!

This is the most important book I have read on Christian doctrine of how grace works on our lives in general, but especially as applied to the struggle with unwanted homosexual desire. The intense inner battle between the authority of the Bible and the appeal of what the culture would have strugglers believe about who they are is clarified. A final outcome of reading this book for the individual struggler offers profound inner peace and faith-affirming hope. Rosaria's book does NOT offer false expectations or reflect a shallow understanding of homosexuality. As someone who has lived intensely on both sides of this issue, she is expertly situated and verbally gifted to address this difficult issue. She shows the historical roots of Freud's definition of personal identity in sexual terms and contrasts it to the Biblical definitions of who we are in Christ. Although OPENNESS UNHINDERED has a much broader application to how the Christian life can be lived through God's power, it is the most important Christian book written on homosexuality since the closing of Exodus International, and maybe ever. Hopefully it will give all who call themselves Christians, a deeper, more compassionate and accurate understanding of this issue from which to approach both personal interactions and relationships and institutional and governmental policies.

A Profound Book on a Difficult Subject

Openness Unhindered is a sequel to Rosaria Butterfield’s book Confessions of an Unlikely Convert in which she details her conversion to faith in Christ after being deeply into the lesbian, feminist life style as a tenured English professor at a university. This book is quite different from her first book in that Butterfield goes deeper into the philosophical and theological roots of sexual identity versus the truth about a Christian’s identity in Christ. This is a book that must be read slowly to grasp the deep Biblical truths all Christians need to recognize, learn and digest.

Butterfield has profound chapters on Conversion, Identity and Repentance followed by two equally profound chapters on Sexual Orientation (Freud’s Mistake) and What Does it Mean to be Gay? Essentially she shows that our identity comes from God not from what we do.

A final chapter on Community explores the need for all Christians to reach out to neighbors and minister to them. Butterfield and her husband have found unique ways to do this.

This book will inform anyone looking for a biblical reasoned discussion of the issues of gay sex and the church. It will help those struggling with sexual sin or guilt-ridden about the past. It will enlighten run of the mill Christians about the fact that we are all sinners. We need to repent daily and cling to our identity in Christ. Butterfield writes with warmth, wit and wisdom.

Beautiful writing, spiritual insights, a humane voice with a timely book--but poorly formatted Kindle version.

Acts 28:30-31 --And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters and was welcoming all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.

Taking the title from the last verses of Acts--Openness "implies we hold nothing back from the God who made us and will take care of us." Unhindered "means that we are unencumbered by our failures."-- Rosaria Butterfield yet again, with clear and beautiful prose, gives us insights into Biblical truths and life lessons from her very own, unique, and fascinating life. It's about more than homosexuality or sexual sin--though it certainly deals with this intensely. It's about who we really are. Butterfield writes: "The root of my lesbianism was pride. The root of my heterosexual sin was pride as well." To know the root of our sin requires Scriptures' truth. To know who we are--our true identity--we must know the God who made us and gave us those Scriptures.

And in this generation where the Church needs to understand these sexuality/gender-identity issues like never before, Butterfield is one person well-equipped to give us teaching and special understanding of such matters. I can't help but think she is here and eloquent for just such a time as this.

I'm putting this incomplete review as a placeholder for now--I have been reading since Amazon sent me the book in the wee hours of July 1--because I want browsers to know that this is a book worth buying and reading. Even studying. There are beautiful moments in Mrs. Butterfield's voice. Reading it, I already prefer it to her previous work (which I also reviewed a while back).

If you read her previous book (SECRET THOUGHTS etc) and found it powerful and valuable--as I did--then this is another offering to acquire.

If you did not read SECRET THOUGHTS etc, you won't be lost. The author again offers a look into her life pre-conversion and the journey of mind and heart that led her into repentance and in Jesus. As she herself states: "I lost everything but the dog." As she also says (location 423 in the Kindle version): "The sinfulness of sin unfolded for me in the authority of the Bible, the growing sweetness with my union with Christ, and the slow sanctification of the mind that this births."

Because her previous life had included deep and wide ties with the LGBTQ community--she herself living as a lesbian and English professor of Queer Studies--she is not at all homophobic. She is someone who loves her neighbor and the God who commands such love. And she shows us the value of approaching people in relationship, not as purely objects to evangelize.

I am leaving this placeholder review and will add to it later, but I expect no disappointment with this second book-- only insights and pleasure. Already I can tell you this is not only for those with LGTB identification, but for all. I believe we are all, ALL, affected or bound by sexual sin, in agreement with the quote by Sam Allberry that Butterfield includes. ((location 71)

I will add that the Kindle version is poorly formatted --many "pages" have screwy drop caps or extra lines in the middle of sentences or oddly spaced praragraphs--and I hope the publisher will attend to that. It takes away some from the pleasure of reading. A warning to those who get really burned when ebooks are badly formatted--might want to get the print.

The book's main themes are hybrid desktop/Internet applications, threading, rich text handling, Qt's graphics/view architecture, and Qt's model/view architecture (to which four chapters are devoted), although many other topics are covered. Besides each chapter's main subject, lots of other classes, methods, and techniques are used wherever they make sense, to show as many Qt features as possible. So even the most experienced Qt programmer should discover aspects of Qt they weren't aware of, discover new techniques, and be inspired with new ideas.

This is my third solo book--and beyond doubt the most difficult to write. The key dilemma I've faced throughout was respecting the first word of the title: "advanced". Some reader is bound to notice the use of some particular technique and exclaim "oh no, he didn't use a timewarp pointer--how can he call this advanced!". Well, although an expert in the book's subject area it is possible that I really don't know about timewarp pointers. However, it is more likely that I deliberately chose not to use them. My aim is to always show the clearest, simplest, most maintainable code possible, and to always prefer solid Qt best practices over fragile exotica. (For example, in the entire book there is only one use of a member function pointer.) Nonetheless, I think this book will take readers beyond what most other Qt books cover, and I'm confident that many readers will find much to challenge and interest them--as well as lots of practical code and ideas that they can make direct use of in their own Qt programming. Exactly what the title says

An excellent overview of some of the advanced features of QT, such as displaying web pages, playing multimedia, and multi-threaded programming. I've been using QT professionally for a couple of years now, but I still learnt a great deal from this book.

The writing style is friendly and informal, and all the explanatory text is easy to understand.

All of the example programs worked perfectly, with one minor exception: the 'weather tray icon' app did not display properly -- perhaps because I was running Ubuntu 12.04, whereas the app had been tested on Fedora. (I could not, in good conscience, deduct a star from this book's rating because of that: making apps that work on every variant of Linux is an impossible task :) ).

This book focus on what is essential and important using QT.
For example the model view architecture using desktop widget but also graphical widget,state machine animation framework are very well explain and precise.
The code provided simply work.
I think reader of this book can really save some time during the learning process.It s also a book that you can read close to your qt creator open to experiment each notion explained by Mark.

Well written.

For those who have done C++ GUI programming by Jasmin Blanchette and Mark Summerfield this book will be a nice follow-up. It has the same down-to-earth style and covers topics that were not covered in the former book. Personally, I found very useful QTextDocument examples and topics on concurrency.

By 1992, Ford had squeezed the 4x4's running gear into a shorter Escort body, complete with 227bhp engine and ever-more-aggressive aerodynamic aids. The limited-edition Monte Carlo came in 1994, followed by the final RS Cosworth - a revised Escort with smaller turbocharger and user-friendly appeal. Production ceased in 1996. Today, each model has a loyal following among motorsport fans and fast Fords enthusiasts. And as the cars become increasingly sought-after, so too does the pursuit of perfection. About the Author

Sporting Escorts have been a fixture in Dan Williamson's life for longer than he remembers. Early childhood spent sliding across the seats of his dad's GT-engined Mk1 instilled an anorak-level addiction to fast Fords. Like most Escort enthusiasts, his condition is incurable. Dan was given his first car aged 15, a 1972 Mk1 that's perhaps best described as a long-term project. It currently shares garage space with a '71 Mexico and a 1600 Sport. Dan trained as a newspaper reporter before deciding it's more fun to write about cars. He's been a motoring journalist since 1997, working for the UK's leading automotive publishers. Today he's a freelance contributor to a variety of magazines, including Fast Ford.

Sketches from Japan is the charming record of an eminent architect's visit to Tokyo and Kyoto. Each day Francis Ching would walk downtown, past temples and through residential districts, recording his visual impressions with a fine pen. He delights in the juxtapositions of old and new, hard-edged and organic, plain and richly textured, that are nowhere more striking than in a modern Japanese city. His freehand line drawings capture the essence of springtime Japan--more successfully than photographs, perhaps, through the isolation of elements and elimination of details inherent in the sketching process. The dark wood of an ancient gateway is emphasized by drawing the surrounding trees only in profile; the shaggy outline of a thatch roof suggests its straw surface as clearly as a completed study. The artist places each drawing in context with a few articulate sentences; he includes some gentle lessons on drawing and geometry, but the text is not didactic. The intimacy of many of the scenes--small interiors, architectural details, people strolling down narrow streets--is enhanced by the informality of the pen-and-ink medium. The monochromatic line treatment is in keeping with traditional Japanese sumi-ink drawings. The book also continues a tradition set by 18th-century haiku poets and artists such as Buson and Taiga, who recorded their journeys in combinations of diary and sketchbook. Sketches from Japan is a small-scale gem, and we can learn as much from it as from many more elaborate photographic studies and coffee-table books. --John Stevenson

Cultural and Aesthetic Delight

There is a long tradition among artists and writers of maintaining a journal to record observations and impressions. Many writers use journals to write informally, often spontaneously, to describe real or imagined people, places, and events. Artists and naturalists as well fill sketchbooks with both words and images to help focus their observations. Frank Ching, the author of this sketchbook, not only records the optical reality of what is seen; he uses these drawings as a means of gaining understanding, insight, and perhaps even inspiration. His drawings stimulate the mind to think and can even make visible aspects that cannot be seen by the naked eye, or captured on film by a camera.
Frank Ching made most of the drawings in this sketchbook in or around O-okayama, a town southwest of downtown Tokyo, where the Tokyo Institute of Technology is located. The subject matter ranges from street scenes to traditional construction details, from temples and their sacred precincts to stimulating juxtapositions of old and new. He has successfully captured the sights, sounds and even smells of vibrant metropolis Tokyo, enabling the reader to feel the humid heat of the day or the cool rainy mist that fell as he drew. In addition, there are scenes sketched during the author's brief excursion to Kyoto and the mountain village of Takayama
All the drawings were executed in a pure contour-line technique with a fountain pen and black ink. There is a crispness and finality to an inkline that is both daunting and exciting. The process not only fostered the careful observation of details; it also required seeing how they fit into the larger framework and pattern of shapes, and noting which details could be omitted. The shape and extent of the white spaces are as important to a composition as what is delineated.
Francis D.K. Ching (1943- ) completed a month in the spring of 1990 as a visiting scholar at the Tokyo Institute of Technology which he spent producing this sketchbook.

beautiful and INSPIRING collection of drawings

Every fan of drawing, everyone who has ever traveled with a sketchbook will enjoy this little collection of his travel sketches from Japan, and this will delight those already acquainted with the ravishing beauty of Francis Ching's architectural drawings. Ching's other books are analytical drawings, showing architectural detail and forms with a controlled, disciplined line that architects know as the Ching style - contour drawings with a hierarchy of line emphasizing the outlines of figures. Ching's freehand sketches are a remarkably free riff on the drawing approach seen in his other work, as if he finally took his tie off and improvised a solo.

These are predominantly contour drawings. Tone is used for contrast of focus, or emphasis of a figure to its ground, but tone is rarely used to define a volume. The control of line is extraordinary, and the variety of marks interesting. But the power of the drawings often comes from his orchestration of many contrasting textures, shapes, and details.

Ching has remarkable control of representing a detail and describing its place as a part of a whole: there is always clarity in the disorder, even showing the exuberant chaos of telephone and power lines criss scrossing over the busy street. One can almost feel the mist, smell the sounds and hear the bustling noise on the street. The crowds of people are convincing, and he has no fear of quickly sketching a whole cluster of motorcycles. Looking at Ching's drawings feels like taking lessons in vitality, in visual selection, and in how a talented draughtsman really requires an editing, selective eye.

The drawings are unfortunately interrupted by a graphic drawing analysis of the Centennial Hall of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. There's nothing particularly wrong with the analysis but it is nowhere near as compelling as the drawings, and also this sort of formal drawing analysis is covered well in Ching's other works. This analysis breaks the tone of the rest of the books, and it's a relief when the analysis ends and the exploration of Japan's urban life begins again.

Wonderful sketches!

Sketches from Japan by Frank Ching is a wonderful book of the time he spent in Japan teaching and walking and sketching. The sketches transport you and you experience the many by-ways that he walked and examined. Ching has an incredible talent and you gain from sensing his observations. I highly recommend the book to drawers, travelers, and those who appreciate fine art.
