Grade 6-10-A sequel to Enchanted Runner (Avon, 1999), this book stands on its own as a work of historical fiction and a time-travel story. Kendall, 14, has rediscovered his Native American roots in New Mexico at the Acoma Pueblo, ancestral home of his mother's family. He is the last of the Snake Clan, a long line of warriors and mystics responsible for carrying out the yearly ceremonies that propitiate the gods and bring rain. In his modern existence, he is struggling to deal with the death of his mother. When his father remarries, the teen cannot accept the woman, and he flees into the desert. Transported back to 1598, he becomes part of the vibrant life of the Acoma people, who live on a mesa and farm the surrounding land. The tribe's interaction with a group of Spaniards outfitted in armor results in tragic and devastating consequences, with Kendall a participant, witness, and one of the few survivors. The violence and brutality are powerfully portrayed in this action-filled story. Details of everyday life on the mesa and the people's strong spiritual connection to the land are what make this book stand apart from many other time-travel stories. An author's note explains that the historical events described are based on an eyewitness account by one of the Spanish soldiers. The novel succeeds as a fast-paced adventure and as a meditation on the consequences of a clash of dissimilar cultures.

Gr. 6-9. The author of Enchanted Runner (1999) brings back Kendall Drennan in this combination of historical fiction and time travel. Fourteen-year-old Kendall, half Anglo and half Acoma Indian, can't accept his father's remarriage to Juanita, a woman of Spanish descent. Hoping to sort out his feelings, he runs away to Enchanted Mesa, a sacred site for the Acoma tribe. But instead of sorting things out, he slips back through time to sixteenth-century Acoma, New Mexico, where he participates in a snake dance and observes the atrocities inflicted on the group by the Spanish conquistadors. Little's strength is her depiction of daily life among the Acoma, especially the ceremonies performed by the now-extinct Snake Clan, but the battle scenes are not for the squeamish. Less convincing than the home-life particulars is Kendall's time-travel turnabout: it's hard to imagine that, upon returning to real life, his new knowledge of Juanita's ancestors helps him to make peace with her. This novel is a perfect tie-in for any class studying New Mexico history

I'm not usually a fan of "bonk on the head, go back in time" books, but this one is about the Acoma Revolt, a subject that is seldom written about, and never as entertainingly as this. This novel is a perfect tie-in for any class studying New Mexico history, and is written easily enough to be accessible for 5th graders, is spot-on for middle schoolers, and not too juvenile for high schoolers.

Great book -- Continues the coming-of-age (and cultural heritage) of Kendall, who was "The Enchanted Runner" in the book before this one. Half Acoma (Native American) & half Anglo, Kendall time-travels to live with his Acoma Snake Clan just as they are beginning to face the Spanish conquistadors. I won't give anything away, but I would definitely recommend this book (for middle-school up, I think).

A bit darker than I expected, but that comes with historical accuracy. Overall a good book if you like bittersweet stories. Not recommended for younger or sensitive readers.

With this entertaining and stimulating book, de Botton (How Proust Can Change Your Life) examines the ways architecture speaks to us, evoking associations that, if we are alive to them, can put us in touch with our true selves and influence how we conduct our lives. Because of this, he contends, it's the architect's task to design buildings that contribute to happiness by embodying ennobling values. While he makes no claim to be able to define true beauty in architecture, he suggests some of the virtues a building should have (illustrated by pictures on almost every spread): order combined with complexity; balance between contrasting elements; elegance that appears effortless; a coherent relationship among the parts; and self-knowledge, which entails an understanding of human psychology, something that architects all too often overlook. To underscore his argument, de Botton includes many apt examples of buildings that either incorporate or ignore these qualities, discussing them in ways that make obvious their virtues or failings. The strength of his book is that it encourages us to open our eyes and really look at the buildings in which we live and work. A three-part series of the same title will air on PBS this fall. He occasionally overindulges in florid prose, but critics agree that his more general observations of architecture are sound and interesting, if not entirely novel. The average reader will find much of interest in the broad range of eras, places, and styles that de Botton discusses. Well-placed photographs illustrate each point in the text. The book is so visual, in fact, that the BBC is making a three-part television series based on it, to air on PBS this fall.

A Superb Read

After buying and reading this book, I did something I've never done before: ordered a copy sent to a lifelong friend who, like me, is not an architect, but has an appreciation and abiding interest in topics and writings that are so well developed and imaginative as to take the topic to a new or higher level. I told my friend that this little book is worth reading in itself on at least three separate levels of interest and enjoyment: 1) the marriage of function and beauty revealed in good architecture, 2) the soaring, imaginative range of vocabulary the author uses to make his thesis, and finally, 3) the exquisite humor he inserts, when least expected, to lighten (and enlighten). In short, this is a wonderful little book to send your spirits soaring, get a frequent laugh, and even discover new meaning and beauty in the man-made structures around us.

More Manner That Matter

This book asks a question that has interested me for a long time -- what makes some buildings beautiful? Unfortunately, the author does not provide much in the way of answers. He does discuss some interesting ideas, notably the fact that ideas of beauty in architecture change over time. But he passes over this to go on to more timeless issues -- balance, elegance, etc. It all sounds very nice -- Mr. De Botton's prose in unfailingly elegant, sometimes irritatingly so. It just doesn't add up to much.

Architectural must-read

Botton captures the essence of why we build what we do and dives into the reasoning of where our most treasured landmarks come from. This is a must read for anyone connected with the field of architecture and certainly a page turner for those who wish to be.

The writing is very well articulated but can get a little dense at times. Not bad, just a lot of information. I found it best to take this book section by section with periods of contemplation between allowing myself to digest the content better. In my opinion, this is not a book to pick up for a quick read and easy discard. There are some very well thought out concepts within these pages and it is well worth the time to read it more than once.

This book has found a place on my small shelf of essential reading.

I bought this TOME for my son who wants to get into excavation. It is chock full of real-life photos and diagrams of the processes; which are thoroughly described. I heartily recommend it for anyone who spent the first ten years of their life sitting in a dirt pile with their Tonkas...and sees no reason to change now :)

This book covers everything!

I was a landscape/ concrete contractor looking to get more into the excavation side of things. This book is a one stop shop for basically anything involving excavation. It covers everything from pulling stumps and digging foundations, up to digging quarries and mining procedures. Obviously parts of this book will not apply to your needs, but the chapters are set up well and you can pick and choose what you want to read. Though I'm no longer in business, it's still a great reference book to keep on the shelf. Highly, highly recommended!

Great book for those looking for results

This is a really good book for those who are new to self hypnosis or those who are looking for better results.

I recorded some of the scripts into my voice recorder, then lie on the bed and listen to them. Excellent results.

So far I've used the Stress Reduction and Self Esteem scripts (these two are worth the price of the book).

I'm always looking for a good hypnosis book to give me new ideas and this one is great!

From theory, to problems and solutions

Those who are familiar with hypnosis and hypnotherapy know that one of most important steps is to spot the client's problem.
This book offers a general overview of hypnosis in the first few chapters. Then, the authors offer a clear and comprehensive overview of various problems (e.g. weight loss, depression, smoking cessation, self-esteem and motivation,..) and dig into the reasons which might have caused these problems, proposing an easy-to-read and understand theoretical framework added with several examples, case studies, and teaching how to structure inductions and suggestions, depending on the problem itself.
This is the kind of book one might well treat as a little manual to gain some new insights with ref. to various problems a client would like to solve.
I'd recommend it to those who are interested in hypnotherapy and aim for a better understanding of these processes and for a positive change.
