Amazing in this day and age

Unbelievable that this type of corruption not only exists in the modern era but is actively encouraged and sanctioned from the top. Police officers forced into mental institutions in an effort to discredit them? It sounds like something out of a novel rather then the actual happenings at a major American Police Department. For those of us who are constantly bombarded by so called `news stories' from places like Yahoo, it is refreshing and comforting to see that real investigative journalism is not dead. Graham Rayman is the type of journalist I haven't seen since Mike Wallace, a real old school reporter not afraid to get his hands dirty and dig for the truth. Hats off to Officer Schoolcraft and Graham Rayman for bringing this shocking travesty of modern policing to the public eye.

There seems to be a consistency in human behavior where an eternal conflict exists between those who seek exposure of errors, violations and crimes with those who seek to conceal such. It is not just that wrongdoers or criminals seek concealment, but that those in positions of overall authority, from Mayors to Commissioners or other senior executives who should encourage such revelations, instead seek to prevent exposure of institutional failings.

So here in this book we have the factual telling of what happened to New York City Police Officer Adrian Schoolcraft who was and is attacked, illegally imprisoned and targeted by our “government” for revealing that the Police Department concealed crimes and by such concealment protected criminals and injured the cause of Justice. There are two aspects to what the City of New York did to its own people.

First the NYC Government attacked a courageous New York City Police Officer, Adrian Schoolcraft, who recorded and documented the deliberate concealment of crime in New York City and when he exposed this extraordinary corruption those men sworn to protect us, attacked him. He was actually kidnaped from his home where senior executives of the NYCPD authorized the break in of his house and his transportation to Jamaica Hospital in Queens County, NYC where he was illegally detained for days. That is why I always say reality is stranger than fiction.

This kidnaping was merely one aspect of continual illegal acts to prevent his disclosure of concealment of crime reports and various criminal acts in New York City. Keep in mind that this only recently occurred and is not some recounting from the days of “Serpico”. This case of Adrian Schoolcraft is currently going on.

Second, separately from the attack upon Police Officer Adrian Schoolcraft is that fact that what he exposed was the concealment of crime reports and criminal activity by the New York City Police Department. While it may be difficult to understand and accept what occurred it can be stated that when a crime report was made by the victim, the NYCPD would destroy or alter the record of the Crime Report so that it would not be investigated. Think about this for a moment and tell me if again my belief that reality is more fantastic than fiction is not true? What is of great importance is this was being done upon high authority in the Police Department, by those responsible for the management of law enforcement in New York.

Now take this a step further. When what occurred was exposed the United States Attorney, The New York State Attorney General, the Governor of the State of New York, The Mayor of the City of New York and etc., all did nothing. Nothing at all. We have Adrian Schoolcraft, alone as an individual, battling with privately hired attorneys seeking to protect himself and the public. His difficulty in obtaining competent and honest Legal Counsel is also described in the book but from my experience is tragically normal and expected.

So buy this book, buy it now. Do the research to confirm what it records. The public records and news reports are available and believe every word of it, as it is true. Then write your “government” and demand an explanation. This is just one very small but significant chapter in the ongoing historical battle between those who seek to expose failures in our government, to safeguard us all and those who seek to conceal such failure and endanger us all. They Came and Got Me....

What if you knew that senior police officials were breaking the law? What if you gathered evidence against them by recording their conversations? What if they found out what you were doing, then showed up at your apartment, arrested you, and had you locked up in a mental hospital?

That's what happened to New York City Police Officer Adrian Schoolcraft in 2009. And that's the story told in Graham A. Rayman's book: The NYPD Tapes: A Shocking Story of Cops, Cover-ups, and Courage.

Schoolcraft started his police career in 2002 and did pretty well until Steven Mauriello took over the 81st Precinct in October 2006. Mauriello used a "...hands-on, numbers- and productivity-focused approach that was favored by ambitious commanders in the era of CompStat." CompStat was the NYPD's computerized system for tracking the crime rate in every precinct, and the "activity" of every police officer, in the city.

Naturally, if Precinct Commanders are judged by CompStat, they are going to do everything possible to keep police "activity" up and crime down – or at least give the appearance this is happening. Schoolcraft's ratings started to suffer as he resisted the pressure to increase "activity" by arresting innocent people and "reduce" crime by falsifying reports.

One technique used to increase "activity" in the 81st Precinct was called a "Mauriello Special" – find people loitering on street corners and arrest them all. Even if no crime had been committed these arrestees would be held for a few hours and then released. This counted for police "activity" in CompStat and would look good on Mauriello's job reviews.

To keep crime down cops were pressured to deliberately falsify reports. When a man named Timothy Covel was attacked and robbed the police wrote it up as "lost property." This same type of corruption was happening not just in Schoolcraft's 81st Precinct but also all over the city. Rayman provides numerous examples from other precincts.

One of the most horrifying cases was exposed by a retired Detective First Grade Harold Hernandez who arrested a sexual predator named Daryl Thomas in 2002. Hernandez discovered that many of Thomas's earlier crimes had been falsely reported as misdemeanors. This hid the pattern of what was really going on, delayed Thomas's arrest, and caused more women to suffer attacks – all to keep the "official" crime rate down in CompStat so Precinct Commanders would look good.

It was in this corrupt environment that Adrian Schoolcraft collected 1000 hours of recorded conversations documenting the crimes being committed against the people of New York by the very police department sworn to protect them. When the department finally became aware what Schoolcraft was up to they tried various means to pressure or discredit him. Most frighteningly, on 31 October 2009, they arrested him in his apartment and then had him held in a mental hospital for six days against his will.

One morning while he was there a doctor asked Schoolcraft, "Do you feel they are coming after you?" and he answered, "Well, they did. They came and got me."

This book could have been better edited; there are occasional errors that should have been caught and corrected before publication. The story is dramatic enough however, and important enough, to over-ride these small problems. This is a very important book about how a large police department can become corrupt and turn into the enemy of the people it was meant to serve. This is a book that should be read by every citizen of the United States.

Don't buy the Dummies book - get this one

I am not a programmer, but I work in the tech industry. I wanted to move into web development, so I had to learn Java. Unfortunately, I bought two other books before this one. This is very clear, very concise, and doesn't assume that you're already a C programmer! What's that about? This book is laid out and organized very well, and is very easy to read. Concepts are expanded on through the use of analogies, which makes them much easier to recall from memory. Excellent for people like me who didn't know what a compiler was and never programmed in ANY language. I love this book - thanks!!!

Helped overcome my frustration..

I've been trying to teach myself programing for the last year and a half. I've tried several languages and a number of those "teach yourself in x hours/days" books. I've finished many of those books and re-read several of them as well. However, sit me down and solve a problem? --just couldn't do it. This book helped for a number of reasons:
1. It pretty much focuses on Applets. This helps by not bogging you down with two many libraries (which you encounter when you switch from applets to applications). You're able to deal with a few things alot and get really familiar with them.
2. It has a lot of examples at the end of each chapter to help you review and incorporate what you've learned. (Examples are related to skills you've just learned and do not incorporate new ones out of the blue).
3. It seemed the authors had considerable teaching experience. They really hammered on points that other authors just "blow" over...like "What is a constructor?", "How do you use the "this" keyword?"..
4. It stays concise within a smaller segment of Java. You deal primarily with the AWT, as opposed to Swing.
5. It uses examples that are easy to conceptualize. You don't have to mess with binary, hexadecimal, and octal numbers and use mathmatical formulas all the time--like you do in Beginning Java.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to build foundational skills and who needs to understand why they did something as much as how they did it.

Excellent for Beginners

This book is perfect for my students. It presents the concepts in small simple steps. It introduces graphics early on so that the students can appreciate their work. Events are covered early on too so that they can create interactive software. (This first edition covers Java 1.0 event model. The second edition -- sold in Europe is even better -- it covers the Java 1.1 & 1.2). Objects and inheritance are covered in a timely manner. My students find this book clear and straight forward. By the end of the book all major features are covered -- including threads and exceptions. This book is not a complete reference book and is better for it. Once my students understand what's going on I send them to reference books to find out all the intimate details. This book is just right for beginning high school students with no programming experience. Job well done.
PS -- if anyone is interested I have lecture notes and theory quizzes that I could share with others.

New Insights into a Musical Culture

A study of women musicians in Uzbekistan makes a very narrow and exotic book, but author and musician Tanya Merchant offers a well-written, detailed, and insightful story that keeps the reader fascinated. Uzbekistan, as other Central Asian nations, was during the Soviet and Cold War era a poorly known backwater, but since its independence and Western interests in nearby Afghanistan, the nation has become politically interesting and a destination for Silk Road adventure tourism. Also, through the Aga Khan Trust and the Smithsonian Institution, recordings and international touring groups have brought Central Asian music to the world music fan. With centuries of traditional Islamic practices, despite Soviet modernization, women musicians have separate roles and venues. The focus on women musicians before, during, and after the Soviet era in artistic maqom, Western classical, traditional and arranged folk, and popular categories expands an appreciation of this culture.

Merchant, who speaks Russian, learned to play the dutar, a two silk-stringed long-neck lute, and to sing from two Uzbeki women. She acquired the rhythmic patterns and studied maqams, the set of modes or scales applied to a canon of melodies. She took part in wedding rituals and women only celebrations and interviewed many Uzbeki women for their background, training, and musical experience. Among the information discussed in the book, the reader learns that women play the dutar and rarely the chang hammered dulcimer or Kashgari rubob lute, while men can play any instrument including the dutar. Women are chiefly vocalists and perform with ethnic costume, always dresses, in contrast to men instrumentalists whose attire is Western. In Uzbeki culture a female is a girl no matter her age until married, when she become a woman. The Soviets encouraged more women in institutional music training, both conservatories and academies, but also created a pan-Soviet folkloric musical style with modified folk instruments and harmonies, which are otherwise outside traditional practice. It was particularly interesting to learn that women are very popular Pop stars but that their band's music, despite electric guitars, drumset, synthesizers, and assorted Arabic and Turkish idioms and instruments, are not global rock; patriotic and romantic tunes are favored. These musicians were conservatory trained. In contrast to oral transmission by mimicking methods for traditional music, the academies teach by Western approaches of scores. Indeed, women have become directors of Western-style orchestras performing symphonies, concerti, and ballets whose composers are mainly Western. The traditional maqom canon was developed solely by men, probably an artifact of male domination in the culture, as it was in the West until the more enlightened late 20th century, when women composers began winning the Pulitzer Prize and other honors.

Women musicians are important in Uzekistan despite the obligated restrictions. Their strong vocals, whether artistic maqoms or pop or folkloric opera, are key to musical performances. The virtuosic dutar playing are admired. Women are not secluded at home or playing only for themselves or for family occasions of weddings and circumcisions. This book provides a broader picture. They only omission is religious and devotional music. Women Sufis are found in Uzbekistan. In short, a good, worthwhile read for ethnomusicologists and world music fans.

I bought this for my 4 year old and it's perfect! Short, one page stories of kick butt women that reinforces to my child she can do anything! There are even stories about young girls, which was an added bonus because she saw the picture and asked me to read the story about the girl who is 'just like me'! I love anything that gives my child more confidence and shows her that the sky is the limit!!!

RECOMMEND WITH ONE WORD OF CAUTION

RECOMMEND WITH ONE WORD OF CAUTION: Like this book very much. Empowering for my 7 year-old daughter and probably healthy for my 6 year-old. I can literally see their viewpoint opening up with the wheels turning behind their eyes when I read these short biographies about women that have impacted the course of "HIS"story more than credit is probably typically given. But one work of caution...at the risk of being ostracized as a bigot in today's world of LGBT acceptance.....which I am usually on board with 100%, there is one biography on a young child that chose to undergo gender transformation that - quite frankly - made me uncomfortable reading to my same-aged daughter and son amidst the Amelia Earharts, Helen Kellers, Cleopatras, and Marie Curies of history. I also believe it is important to not contribute to disenfranchising groups of people for traits that may differ from your own, but I was surprised to discover how disappointed I was with this particular page in this particular book. Sounds to me like a populist appeal to be the most liberal voice in the room. Not a kids book element of feminine heroism that belongs alongside Queen Elizabeth.

Now feel free to eviscerate me for perhaps thinking differently from you...call me a bigot...I don't mind. The kids I'm telling you about were baptized by a homosexual pastor, and I'm comfortable with a number other examples and - more importantly - knowledge of my own principles to be comfortable making this post despite what might be considered its non-politically-correct sentiments. I just think the next parent that buys this book should be informed all that it contains. Overall, though, a well-written work about strong, historically-accomplished women.

About the Author
Vic Bearcroft is a self-taught professional wildlife and pet portrait artist, who works in a pastel, pencil, watercolour, ink, coloured pencil, charcoal and acrylic media. Having spent part of his childhood in Kenya, Vic has been drawing animals since he could hold a pencil. Being passionate about wildlife in general, Vic works with a large number of animal welfare and conservation organisations worldwide, donating prints, merchandise and funds. Bearcroft lives in Newark, U.K.
He says: While I consider myself to be a wildlife artist, I prefer to paint close-up intimate portraits of animals as individuals, rather than in landscape settings. My aim is to capture not only the likeness of the subject in my painting, but also the life and soul in its eyes.
