Wonderful resource

I am one who is very interested in miscellaneous information, and this book is plentiful in it. The Illustrated Reverse Dictionary is a wonderful tool for learning new things, like law terminology and types of cheeses. Don't laugh; haven't you ever wondered what Munster cheese was exactly? Haven't you ever wondered what "habeas corpus" meant? If you're hungry for knowledge and trivial facts, this book is ripe for the picking.

Great for Working backward from a problem

As an author, I have found this book useful for some strange questions. What are the parts of a castle? The book takes that question and expands on it to give. For example, there is a complete list of clothing terms, an illustration of the parts of a gun, even a detailed description of the parts of an organ (as in church organ, and a listing of all of the parts on a suit of armor.

For the first time and in his own words, the Dalai Lama charts his spiritual journey from his boyhood days in rural Tibet to his years as a monk in the capital city of Dharamsala, to his life in exile as a world leader and symbol of peace.

My Spiritual Journey provides a vivid and moving portrait of the Dalai Lama’s life journey that is personal in tone but universal in scope. My answer was "I don't venerate them.!" For me the representative is wisdom,kindness,spiritual,meditation, and compassion.there's people afraid of another religious,my is open for listening.in this book,he is giving us a "warning for us to take care our planet, our water is polluted,our wildlife is in danger of extinct,the mountains have become bold as monk's head,the deforestation is all over." He is telling us to accept death as normal process of life,we need to dissipate our fears,he tells us about reincarnation ,we could be reborn as a incect or an animal,(I don't mind to come back,as a elephant, hahaha.) Books like this is like music to my ears and food for my soul,remarkable reading.Thelma

Marvelous Book

I had always wanted to know the story of how they found the current Dali Lana after his predecessor died they have that story and it is fascinating. As I read I realized that if they had to search for the new incarnation when he dies what a huge task that would be because they are no longer limited to Tibet. Then he mentioned that he can put his essence, or whatever you want to call it, into a currently living human being. That gave me personally hope again that we would have his wonderful guidance again. When I saw 7 years in Tibet and Kundun I knew why he as a child had such an interest in the world outside of Tibet it is because he would someday have to be out here and the rest of the world needed his wisdom and compassion badly.

Not an autobiography in the strictest sense

This book is a collection of excerpts from speeches, lectures, recorded interviews, and written material by the Dalai Lama. Some of these excerpts are recent; some are decades old. They are interspersed by interpretive comments by the woman who compiled the book. None of the information is new-- it's all out there already, and people who are familiar with his Holiness' life and writings will not find much that is not already known.

That being said, the book is still generous and insightful. It does not tell much about the private man or his inner life, but it is some fine time in the company of the public man.

This looked like a wonderful addition to my library for teaching Construction Management, despite the ridiculously high price. Unfortunately, the book is missing the last 40 pages, including the chronology and other reference materials essential to its appropriate use. Don't pay this price for such poor quality printing.

The problems are hard for a reason

The book is intended for undergrad electrical, computer, mechanical engineering students, etc... That's a given, but is very beneficial for ANY engineering student. I'm going into chemical engineering and my first semester in circuitry was very insightful. What I've gained from this book is a better approach to problem solving. Not to mention a general knowledge of analyzing circuits. The problems are difficult because most of the concepts are easy to understand. Ohm's, Kirchoff's Voltage and Current Laws, Resistance Combinations are all easy concepts to grasp. When tackling a problem however, you need to use those concepts and turn that seemingly difficult problem into an easy problem. Most of the time that's the case. Of course when you get into the later chapters dealing with inductance, capacitance, reactance, power analysis, RLC circuits, etc... those are difficult because the calculus may confuse you. But you need it because they turn the very 'weird looking equations' into 'simpler algebraic equations.'

Bottom line is, the authors make the problems hard because they expect much from you.

Not good for UG students - UG student POV

This book is not a good book to use from an undergrad point of view. The book doesn't give solutions to any of the problems at the end of the chapter. The problems at the end of every chapter are much much harder than the practice problems at the end of every section. The text gives guidance to solve the the easy problems, but it assumes we can use our ingenuity for problems whose concepts are not covered in the book.

A good point of this text is that it explains its examples very well and the practice problems reflect the solved examples. The text is easy to read and follow. But the writer assumes that the reader will go and do an internet search for ideas that he doesn't incorporate for a better understanding of the material.

Terrible

The book contains left out diagrams, and incorrectly solved homework problems for starters. Also, the book has no solutions to the odd worked problems. Furthermore, the authors tend to give simple examples in the text and then give extremely difficult homework problems at the end of the chapter. Lastly, the book has a very bad and vague explanation for passive sign convention that will leave you suffering for the duration of the text.

If you don't have a good instructor that is willing to fill in the gaps that this book leaves, then chances are you will do poorly in your first circuits class.

Challenging but well worth the effort

Clearly Antony Flew was on a mission when he wrote his "Introduction to Western Philosophy." It is very carefully crafted, providing an unparalleled introduction not only to Western philosophers and their ideas, but also to approaches to philosophical thought. Flew assumes that his readers are willing to try to think like philosophers, and he provides a great deal of guidance in terms of both basic information that one ought to know (such as some relevant history of science), and pitfalls that one should avoid (such as fallacies and philosophical "diversions").
In contrast to the chronological, philosopher-centered approach that some introductions to philosophy take, Flew's book is idea-centered, with each chapter focusing on a particular philosophical issue. Within a given chapter, the arguments of philosophers from different times are presented side-by-side. So, for example, Plato's objectivism can face off directly against Hume's subjectivism -- one does not have to read Plato's ideas and wait until many chapters later, when Plato has long been forgotten, for Hume's reply to them. This strategy produces the feeling of live debate as opposed to the rehashing of dead ideas. Flew takes his readers through the major debates on each issue, taking care to point out questions that remain unresolved. He provides long quotations from primary sources to show key arguments unfolding in their original contexts, and follows them up with clear explanations. The book is thick, but words are not wasted; I underline key points that I want to remember, and I set a personal underlining record reading this book. Finally, Flew is enjoyable to read -- professional and serious as the subject demands, but also personable and witty.
I should mention that Flew's book is not suitable for most novices; one might want to read something like Russell's "History of Western Philosophy," that introduces the major philosophers and places them in their social contexts, before attempting Flew's more challenging book. But to those readers already possessing a general idea of the major players and their ideas, Flew's book offers an excellent detailed introduction to each of the most important philosophical debates.

Having read a number of "intro to western philosophy" books, I feel that Mr. A. Flew needs to place himself in Plato's time and then ask himself what would be his own thoughts on concepts such as Ideals, Forms, participation, etc. - for it's so easy to critique Plato, or for that matter any ancient philosopher, from a Monday morning quarterback viewpoint that is well over a thousand years from when Plato walked the earth and thought such thoughts.

Challenging and Worth It

Others have remarked that Flew's style is... dense... which is true. But as Einstein said, everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. Philosophy is complex. If you dumb it down, it is no longer philosophy. No one reviews books on quantum mechanics and complains that they are difficult. Because quantum mechanics is hard. If you want to understand philosophy--not on a superficial, cocktail-party level, but on the level of the ideas themselves--you will have to put in some work. When I read the book, I realized that every 10 pages or so, I would need to stop, look up from the book, and think for a few minutes about what I had just read. It is a not a book to be skimmed.

I argue so intensely because this is the most important book I have ever read. It changed the way I think, by allowing me to spot holes in arguments which I always suspected were weak, although I could not articulate precisely why. It also gives a thorough explanation of the major debates in philosophy throughout history. Flew organizes them by idea rather than by chronology, so that the philosophers' arguments make sense in the context of their debates with other philosophers.

If you want to begin to understand philosophy, read the book. However, if you are not looking for a challenge, or if you only want to get a basic feel for the philosophers' opinions, without digging into their detailed arguments, then there are other books out there more suited to your goals. This book is hard-core. It is for readers who are ambitious and who want to learn something important.
