The Icelandic Language

Icelandic, the official language of Iceland, is spoken by the island nation's entire population of just over 330,000. In addition, approximately 8,000 speakers live in Denmark and 6,500 in North America. T�lva is a combination of two existing words, tala (number) and v�lva (a prophetess or magical seer) or, literally, "number prophet".

A good resource to start learning icelandic by speaking at once. Even though the discs contain audio files instead of mp3 files, the quality of the sound is excellent. I am checking the actual use of some expressions in nowadays. If you want to get into the Icelandic language quickly, this is a higly recommended resource that you should use in the first stage of learning Icelandic.

Matthew Goulish invites the reader to share in his extraordinary life experience in 39 Microlectures. A wealth of knowledge secured in a concise book, bringing the essence of so many important artistic figures together in one edition. Through the inspired writing of Matthew Goulish, interest is sparked and easily developed upon, using the source notes provided within the book. An invaluable reference to a library acquired over a lifetime. I highly recommend 39 Microlectures to any reader searching for an intellectual snowfall.

At the beginning of the book, Goulish invites you to read out of order; to read partial sentences; to read however you please.

Each microlecture stands beautifully on its own but, together, they create a spirited exploration of art, literature, and life. Perfect for sparking thoughts on these topics. It's great for picking up for fun, too.

Learning by stimulating example

This short book of essays jumps all over the map like an overactive brain bent on sharing insights and experience on everything you need to know at once: it's a trip, and a great one. For my part, I took it in short chapters and learned so much. I remain in awe of author and his daring to do this book his way. Liberation!

Thackway's text is an excellent source in every regard - as an introduction to the subject, as a reference for serious scholars, and as an assigned text in an undergraduate or graduate course. - Patrick Day in AFRICAN STUDIES QUARTERLY ...an incredibly well-researched and authoritatively validated text on some of the most memorable films that have come out of Africa... along with appropriate illustrations and very well researched material this book will take long to be eclipsed as it further proves that there are many cinemas to be found in the continent and the Francophone is only one. - Martin Mhando in ARAS Australia ...contains an extended discussion of the position of women in the films from Francophone Africa. Pre-Revisons to the text AND with nice early 60s Picture Cover

Every girl loves Nancy Drew. This series of books is fun to collect and there are several versions out there to choose from. I like the unrevised, picture cover ones as the 1962 version is. It can be hard to know what copy exactly you're getting since there are so many available - boy it takes some scrolling through to find what you're looking for. So if you're looking to complete a matching set this info can be helpful:

The 1962-1967 version features a picture of Ms. Drew in the upper right of the back cover by Bill Gillies. In it she is posed by the trunk of a tree. In later versions she is shown in a picture by Rudy Nappi holding a magnifying glass.

To tell if the version you are looking at is pre or post text revisions, look at the number of chapters and pages. Pre-1966, before the revisions feature 25 chapters and over 200 pages (The info on this page regarding the number of pages has to be a typo - as under 200 pages would mean it was likely a post-1966 version). So if you're hunting for the picture cover, pre-revision books, be sure to check the info each seller gives or ask them before purchasing.

Great fun!

As I lay in bed sniffling this weekend I read Password to Larkspur Lane. Carson gives Nancy a new black and green roadster for her birthday (she gets it early as she needs to evade some thugs who have been spying on the house and they would have recognized her old maroon roadster.) Then she speeds off to Sylvan Lake to join Helen Corning and her parents at the much larger cottage they have taken this summer. Ned Nickerson is also there and Nancy is the belle of the Yacht Club dance, in addition to beating the pants off the snooty "amateur swim champion" who instigated a diving competition because she resented Nancy getting all the male attention on the swim platform. She also wins the adulation of everyone at the lake when she rescues a tot who falls in the water in front of a speedboat, but is duely modest about it, considering that the little girl fell in as a result of Nancy's having questioned her after hearing her name. Nancy and Helen enjoy a few luxurious rides in the splendid new machine as they search for a remote estate surrounded by larkspurs/delphiniums to solve the mystery Nancy stumbled upon as she happened to drive by a car that mysteriously had the windows up even though the weather was clear (actually, the book said the curtains were drawn--did cars come with window curtains in 1933?) Nancy actually falls into dire straits but, fortunately, had the foresight to call Ned beforehand so he could fly in with some burly pals (and Carson, who just happened to be at the local airport as they were about to take off in their just-the-right-size-to-land-in-the-back-yard plane) in the nick of time to thwart the evildoers who were bilking wealthy older women.
Oh, Nancy also won 1st place for her flower arrangement of larkspurs at the Blenheim Flower Show. Of course.
I desperately want this cold to go away so I can drive around in my splendid machine and stumble upon adventures. I will need some new sport frocks though.
