Thomas Mark teaches piano and body mapping. He lives in Portland, Oregon. Roberta Gary is a professor of organ and the head of the Keyboard Division at the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Thom Miles is the director of music at Isaac M. Wise Temple and an assistant organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati. He lives in

Essential reading.

Too often in many activities, people don't recognize their bad habits until attention is called to them. Such was the case with me, but studying this book and applying the knowledge therein has done wonders for my playing.

I injured myself shortly after purchasing this book (acute muscle injury to my right forearm and acute ulnar nerve injury at my left forearm - at the same time!), and a day later, after reaching the section regarding the forearms, I discovered why it happened. Since adjusting the body map of my forearms according to the information in the book, my playing - in spite of the fact that my injuries are still in the healing stages - no longer causes me pain.

No less, the proper mapping of my entire upper body has improved fluidity, speed, accuracy, and tone quality in my playing.

The book is coherently laid-out, as well as clear and concise in its descriptions. The different areas of the body are logically sectioned out, and the subsections are organized in the same manner.

The anatomical diagrams are, for the most part, very easy to follow. A few of them were unclear to me, but when supplemented by the reading, they were not problematic.

Abstract knowledge is not the only thing this book has to offer. Detailed activities are described and suggested at many points in the text so you may directly explore the structures and movements of your body while reading.

Further along in the book are sections on how to map breathing (in order to prevent more unnecessary tension) and the piano itself (to be an extension of the body map).

The final chapter is devoted to discussing injury, including the causes and types that occur.

The principles contained in the book are useful not only for playing the piano, but for all day-to-day movements. In fact, it seems to be crucial that one apply them universally at all times to reap the maximum benefit and more quickly adapt to these new (read: natural) ways of movement.

I've read some complaints in other reviews that the book doesn't focus on technique. This is true, but addressing technique is not the book's intended purpose - at least not directly. The knowledge in this book does, however, provide a solid foundation upon which you can more rapidly and effectively improve your technique.

Well worth investment if you're a serious player

Better to get it, before you need it...But, if you need it, you better get it...
Buy the video also...
I only needed help with two issues, but without this book and the video,
I would be looking at no career or future playing piano.
I had two very bad habits, and, even as incredible as my teacher is, he didn't spot them.
It takes time to correct the bad technique, and you'll lose speed for a while,
but then, after a few months, you'll be faster and stronger than you ever where before.
This is a thorough study of the human body as it applies to playing piano.
It also helps with speed because you'll learn how to utilize your body parts more efficiently.

Excellent Resource for any serious Pianist

Definitely fills a great need. Tendonitis, carpal tunnel and back problems are common among pianists. Most try to get relief by seeking medical attention. This book is the only one I've found which shows how to adjust the pianists playing technique to play in a much more relaxed manner and eliminate the stressful movements that cause the problems to begin with. Disspells a lot of myths about posture, hand position and finger movements

About the Author
Julian Thompson was born in Calcutta and joined the Royal Marines a month after his eighteenth birthday. He was commanding 3 Commando Brigade when they carried out the initial landings to repossess the Falkland Islands. He is a graduate of the British Army Staff College and of the Royal College of the Defence Studies. Now retired, Julian Thompson devotes a great deal of time to the study and writing of military history.

In the Peat!

I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down. The author was frank in his criticisms and flowing in his praise. I thought the descriptions of the tactical battles from the brigade commander's perspective were fascinating. The diagrams of 3 Commando Brigade's major battles were invaluable in digesting the detailed narrative and fully appreciating the enormity of the Brigade's mission. The professionalism and proficiency of this storied unit is given it's just due on these 159 pages. I think the true legacy of this text for me was how it has ignited a curiousity in me to read more about The Battle of the Falklands. Would like to know if there is a companion book out there from the Argentine infantryman's perspective that would shed some light on their actions.

Good flowing account

Julian Thompson's NO PICNIC is an easy to read yet informative account of the 1982 Falklands War. Julian Thompson commanded the 3rd Commando Brigade, the initial assault force, during the Falklands War. From that perspective, he provides a history of the war. Unsurprisingly, the book focuses on the ground aspects, rather than the sea or air aspects of the war. All of the major ground battles are described. Moreover, Thompson gives in-depth insight into the operational level decisionmaking of the war. The book has a scholarly flavor because of Thompson's access to his own correspondence, assessments, and operational reports. In general, NO PICNIC is an instructive account of ground operations in modern warfare.

"Boast and Brag"? No...

This book is an excellent and readable memoir that anybody with an interest in the Falklands War, or in the Royal Marines, would be well advised to read. It is an easy read, but this doesn't detract from the fact that it is a serious piece of work that will hopefully have enduring value.
A previous reviewer describes the book as "boast and brag" and "accusations and self defence". Any member of the British defence community will tell you that the words "boast and brag" and Major-General Thompson are entirely incompatible. You will find no self-justification here and a refreshing lack of inflated ego.

I wanted to work in this field and was considering this major. However, I was not sure if Procurement and Contract Management was for me. So, I bought this book. Every chapter was so intriguing that I finished the whole book in one go! I was very much impressed with the quality of the book. Some people might even say that you get all the information on the Internet these days. But my question is – where else would you get such original perspectives from multiple top professors in one place? Where else would you get information from the top minds of the world which you can trust? Why consider a career in this field? Why study Procurement and Contract Management after all? I liked this book on Procurement and Contract Management. This book helped me clearly understand what actually Procurement and Contract Management is. For just $10, this peer-reviewed/academic book is a real bargain. I was confused as to what to choose for my undergraduate major and this book opened up my eyes. I found this book also useful for graduate or PhD studies. The good thing is that - there are so many top professors writing the insightful chapters in plain English for the students like myself. I think it will save the students (and their parents) thousands of dollars because changing the major again and again will cost them lots of money. I showed this book to my parents and they were glad I bought it. Yes - I highly recommend it. Being a career adviser, I know how important this book is for the students and grads. Why study Procurement? Answers are in the book but I can say with 100% conviction that you will not be disappointed by buying this book. In fact, many college students change their majors and it simply wastes their time (and of course their parents' money). If you buy this book, you will be able to save thousands of dollars for your parents in tuition fees. Graduating months earlier means you will have more opportunity. I read chapter by chapter and found all the chapters very insightful. Look at the universities - all the professors come from top universities, and they offer very insightful tips. Trust me - Procurement for the Curious is a must-read book for the students and people who are undecided about their career options.

Charming introduction to scones

As I plan to review four of Ms. Romsey's cookbooks, I think it best to cover the major issue I have with all of them right at the beginning: Measurements and ingredient names. For the British marketplace, it's not a problem. British cooks will understand things like cornflour and caster sugar; Americans will have to look them up. Volumes can be a problem. British cooks will know that the pints of liquid referred to are Imperial pints. Americans will have to do some stepping to come up with the equivalent measurements for some ingredients. (For the record, an Imperial pint is roughly 20 liquid oz. Thus 1/4 of a pint will be about 5 oz in the UK, not 4 as it is here in the US.) Ingredients listed by weight are simpler, and any cook who routinely uses a scale for baking will have no problems with these. However I think that it would have been an enormous help to all cooks if the measurements had been converted to metric.

The other issue I have, and I don't think this is necessarily a problem with Ms. Romsey's formatting, is that pages will sometimes repeat on my Kindle. I'll go through the first page of a recipe, turn the page and find most of the information repeated on the next page. I don't know what causes this issue, but be aware of it as you work. It can be confusing if you're in the middle of a recipe.

All that said, I must say I like this cookbook tremendously. Scones have always been an occasional treat for me, and now I have a handy and simple guide to making them for myself. Romsey begins with recipes for basic scones, then provides a number of variations for both sweet and savory varieties. The cheddar and chive scones sound most delicious as do the walnut and raisin ones.

Apart from the issues outlined above, the recipes are simple, easy to follow and should allow even timid cooks to bake up delicious scones with ease. I'm very pleased to add this cookbook to my collection and hope Jane Romsey will choose to share more of her favorite recipes with readers.

Self rising Flour Cannot Be Substituted for All Purpose Without Adjusting the Recipe

If you know what you are doing when baking, this seems to be a pretty good scone primer. I love real scones-- not the scone/cookie pastries that became popular in the US back in the 80's and still hang around in a few places.

However, the thing that really puzzled me was the author included "8 oz. self rising flour/ all purpose flour" in each of the 14 recipes. Self rising flour is simply four that has a leavening agent such as baking powder already added during the packing process. Salt is also added.

So if you want to make a scone using self-rising flour then you leave out the baking power and the salt recommended in the recipe. If you want to use all purpose flour then you add the baking powder and the salt. In fact it's possible to make your own self-rising flour by simply adding about 1/8 tsp of salt and a tsp of baking powders to a cup of all purpose flour and sift it together thoroughly.

Clearly the author should have explained this somewhere in the introduction or in each recipe. I gave it two stars because the error appeared in every single recipe.

Repeated recipes

These are good recipes and easy to make. I don't like weighing flour, however, and prefer to have the measurement in cups. Also, several of the recipes repeat the instructions making it appear as though there is more to the recipe than there actually is. For a novice like my granddaughters this was very confusing.

Geeky Christmas Magic!

This short, wonderfully written book is just as magical as the season it’s about. Maybe even more! All Wrapped Up is a cute and funny look into the life of Harriet Manners. She’s a quirky character, who doesn’t know when to stop taking (which I love), and she just had her first kiss with a hunky male model, named Nick, only four days prior to their first date. The story Holly Smale paints is adorable and great for the holiday season that approaches. It is filled with cool little facts about Christmas as well as geekery extra’s.

This is the perfect book for all those who are geeky and nerdy! (Perfect gift too. *Wink* *Wink*)

DEFINITION AND NOMENCLATURE A Stirling engine is a mechanical device which operates on a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle with cyclic compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature levels. It also covers work-consuming machines used as refrigerating systems and heat pumps abstracting heat from a low temperature source and delivering this plus the heat equivalent of the work consumed to a higher tem� perature. Finally it covers work-consuming devices used as pressure� generators compressing a fluid from a low pressure to a higher pres� sure. Very similar machines exist which operate on an open regen� erative cycle where the flow of working fluid is controlled by valves. For convenience these may be called Ericsson engines but unfortunate� ly the distinction is not widely established and regenerative machines of both types are frequently called 'Stirling engines'.
