Good book poorly cataloged

Much can be learned about trends in American politics, religion, social movements, and even science by examining how we have viewed witchcraft in this country. Dr. Gibson is a British literature professor and researcher. She took up the task of examining various aspects of witchcraft in America. Naturally, the events in Salem, MA are examined, but so are the different ways it has been portrayed and explained-whether as a statement about feminism, racism, science, or patriotism-and what it says about the culture at the time those theories were presented. She also examines the various ways witches are portrayed in popular culture: witches in TV shows like Bewitched or Charmed, Wiccans in the media from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to The Blair Witch Project, or "witch hunts" portrayed in the Crucible.

Though this book is hardly a page-turner, it is a valuable read for anyone interested in witchcraft history, the history of Wicca in America, or looking for one aspect of pop culture's mirroring of mores and social expectations. It is not a primer on the practice of witchcraft, nor does it promote or denigrate aspects of it. It is not intended to provide a definitive history on the topic of witchcraft, but to be a mirror on what history has said about it.

And just a side beef with this-it's put in the BF section based on Library of Congress classification, which is all wrong. That's where books on the occult go. This is not a book about the occult-you won't find spells or instructions on how to call corners or thoughts about spirituality at all. It is a book about how we as a nation have historically viewed contemporary and historical accounts of occult happenings. It belongs in the E section, in history.

About the Author
Kathleen Park Talaro is a microbiologist, educator, author, and artist. She has been nurturing her love of microbiology since her youth growing up on an Idaho farm where she was first fascinated by tiny creatures she could just barely see swimming in a pond. This interest in the microbial world led to a biology major at Idaho State University, where she worked as a teaching assistant and scientific illustrator for one of her professors. This was the beginning of an avocation that she continues today―that of lending her artistic hand to interpretation of scientific concepts. She continued her education at Arizona State University, Occidental College, California Institute of Technology, and California State University. She has taught microbiology and major’s biology courses at Pasadena City College for 30 years, during which time she developed new curricula and refined laboratory experiments. She has been an author of, and contributor to, several publications of the William C. Brown Company and McGraw-Hill Publishers since the early 1980s, first illustrating and writing for laboratory manuals and later developing this textbook. She has also served as a coauthor with Kelly Cowan on the first two editions of Microbiology: A Systems Approach. Kathy continues to make microbiology a major focus of her life and is passionate about conveying the significance and practical knowledge of the subject to students, colleagues, family, friends, and practically anyone who shows interest. In addition to her writing and illustration, she keeps current attending conferences and participating in the American Society for Microbiology and its undergraduate educational programs. She is gratified by the many supportive notes and letters she has received over the years from devotees of microbiology and users of her book. She lives in Altadena, California, with husband Dave Bedrosian, and son David. Whenever she can, she visits her family in Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, reading true crime books, music, crossword puzzles, and playing with her rescued kitties.

Barry Chess has been teaching microbiology at Pasadena City College for over 15 years. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and did several years of postgraduate work at the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on the expression of eukaryotic genes involved in the development of muscle and bone. At Pasadena City College, Barry developed a new course in human genetics and helped to institute a biotechnology program. He regularly teaches courses in microbiology, general biology, and genetics, and works with students completing independent research projects in biology and microbiology. Over the past several years, Barry’s interests have begun to focus on innovative methods of teaching that lead to greater student understanding. He has written cases for the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and presented talks at national meetings on the use of case studies in the classroom. In 2009, his laboratory manual, Laboratory Applications in Microbiology: A Case Study Approach, was published. He is thrilled and feels very fortunate to be collaborating with Kathy Talaro, with whom he has worked in the classroom for more than a decade, on this ninth edition. Barry is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and regularly attends meetings in his fields of interest, both to keep current of changes in the discipline and to exchange teaching and learning strategies with others in the field.

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, ...

the book was wrapped in shrink-wrap. interestingly enough, there were some pages with damage, but not enough to return the book and then fall behind on the material for my class, daily quizzes and all. this international version had the same info as the u.s. version. the one thing the professor mentioned was that the authors had provided some misinformation for some of the later sections in the book. so she created her own material for the class to remedy that. other than that, the book did the job for my microbiology class.

Fantastic introduction to JavaFX 8! Herbert Schildt does a great job of explaining each concept thoroughly. I never felt lost or unable to understand the code, and was rather impressed with his easy to follow teaching style. As a self-taught, beginning programmer, I appreciate authors that really break things down and spell them out completely. This book exceeded my expectation!

Do keep in mind that this is an introduction to JavaFX 8. You will learn the skills necessary to write solid, well organized, good looking GUI's, but, as the title suggests, there is more to JavaFX 8 than this book covers. Schildt does a good job of pointing you in the direction of areas to continue your development, but it will be up to you from there. This book is a solid reference for the basics, but do not expect it to be a complete reference for all the "bells and whistles" that JavaFX 8 has to offer. That being said, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build a strong foundation with JavaFX 8.

Schildt once again nails it on this Java text. I found the introductory chapters clear and concise in their content and instruction. I recommend this book to anyone interested in JavaFX 8.

doesn't seem like an "Introduction" to JavaFX

This review will not say verified purchase because I purchased it from my Sister's Amazon account,
However I assure you all that I have indeed received a copy of this book.

I am a novice Java programmer and decided to get this book and go ahead and learn
how to develop java GUIs while I learn the Java language. I also have a copy of Herbert's
"Java: A Beginner's Guide" and I must say that I really enjoyed the book because for the
most part it is a nice introduction into the Java language. Author doesn't "Talk Over" the head
of his reader in that book.

However I must say that this book is a different story.

As I started reading ch.1, I noticed that Herbert assumes knowledge on several Java
topics and pretty much glosses over what he probably considers "common sense"
information. However by the time I made it to chapter 2, I was so discouraged
that I am currently debating even reading the book until I can get a rudimentary understand
of JavaFX.

It seems as if the book is written as a "Refresher" to someone who is already privy to the
AWT/SWING/JAVAfx style of programming and not for someone who has NEVER worked with
a Java GUI before.

I followed right up until the "Nodes" Section, from that point throughout the rest of chapter 1,
I was crucially confused.

I will hold on to this book for future reference, However I think I will try "JavaFX for Dummies"
to get a skeletal understanding of JavaFX. Maybe this will be a future read when I have a bit
more JavaFX experience.

Advanced Structural Dynamics and Active Control of Structures describes comparatively new areas of structural dynamics and control, and presents new tools to solve problems of dynamics and control.

It applies control system methods (such as state space representation, controllability and observability, grammians, system norms, and Markov parameters) to solve structural dynamics problems (e.g., sensor and actuator placement, identification, or damage detection),

It uses structural methods (such as modal analysis, and modal independence) to solve control problems (e.g., the design of LQG and H¥ controllers), and provides new insight into well-known control laws.

It is based on practical applications, originated from developing and applying techniques of structural dynamics, identification, and control to antennas and radiotelescopes.

It uses approximate approach in order to simplify analysis of large structural models (for example, to obtain Hankel singular values for a structure with thousands degrees of freedom), and to represent properties of large structures in closed form – a form that is simple and easy to apprehend.

This book is a revision and continuation of Gawronski’s previous book, Dynamics and Control of Structures. Three new chapters discuss special models, modal actuators and sensors, and system identification. Other chapters have been significantly revised and supplemented with new topics, including discrete-time models of structures, limited-time and frequency grammians and reduction, almost-balanced modal models, simultaneous placement of sensors and actuators, and structural damage detection. The updated and expanded appendices include programs that apply methods presented in the book in Matlab® simulations, Matlab programs that solve examples from each chapter, and additional appendix with data of models presented in the book.

Excellent read for anaysis of Control-Structure-Interaction

This book contains an great overview of modeling and analysis methods for structural dynamics, which are compatible with control system design. It's the best book I've encountered with respect to relating modern/optimal control concepts to structural dynamics and modal analysis. It is concise, and very readable.

I'm about halfway through the book at this point. I'll submit a follow-up review when I'm finished with it.

About the Author
John Dixon has taught HVAC/Refrigeration and Steering/Suspension/Brakes at Centennial College School of Transportation since 1999. He has been Department Coordinator for the Truck and Coach Mentorship there, as well as the Modified Apprenticeship Program, for eight years. A member of the Toronto Automotive Transportation Service Superintendents Association and the Program Advisory Committee for Mack/Volvo Trucks, Mr. Dixon is also Vice Chair of the Curriculum Advisory Committee for Ontario Colleges. His professional licenses include Canadian license 310-S (Automotive), 310-T (Truck), and the Ontario Mobile Refrigeration license. John Dixon also wrote Modern Diesel Technology: Preventive Maintenance and Inspection (Delmar, 2010).

My Diesel Instructor used this book in a/c class he said it was a great book and used it for most of the class and I purchased one for my self studys it has a lot of diagrams, real pressure charts,gauage readings..ect its vary good
