Foundation and Earth, by Isaac Asimov

The fifth novel in Asimov's popular Foundation series opens with second thoughts. Councilman Golan Trevize is wondering if he was right to choose a collective mind as the best possible future for humanity over the anarchy of contentious individuals, nations and planets. To test his conclusion, he decides he must know the past and goes in search of legendary Earth, all references to which have been erased from galactic libraries. The societies encountered along the way become arguing points in a book-long colloquy about man's fate, conducted by Trevize and traveling companion Bliss, who is part of the first world/mind, Gaia.

Kindle edition is a watered down disaster
By J. Callen
This review is specifically of the Kindle edition, published by Ballantine/Bantam.

The Foundation Trilogy is a wonderful piece of work, but the Kindle edition butchers it! Someone has decided to water down Asimov's prose, eliminating some of the more enjoyable passages of the book. Here are some examples, found by comparison with an old Bantam Doubleday hardcover edition.

Several pages into chapter 3, Salvor Hardin is arguing with the Encyclopedists about the decline of the Empire.

Original: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALAXY IS GOING TO POT!"

Kindle: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALACTIC EMPIRE IS DYING!"

In chapter 5, Hardin is again meeting with the Encyclopedists and discussing the threat received from Anacreon.

Original: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we beat the hell out of you and take it anyway."

Kindle: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we take it by force."

I'm going to be asking for a refund.

Epic
By Thomas Wikman
The Foundation trilogy (three first books) and the Foundation series (all seven) are often regarded as the greatest set of Science Fiction literature ever produced. The Foundation series won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. Isaac Asimov was among the world's best authors, an accomplished scientist, and he was also a genius with an IQ above 170, and it shows in the intelligently concocted but complex plots and narrative. There are already 331 reviews for this Science Fiction novel, however, I still believe I have something unqiue to contribute which is stated in my last paragraph.

This book and the rest in the series take place far in the future (allegedly 50,000 years) at a time when people live throughout the Galaxy. A mathematician Hari Seldon has developed a new branch of mathematics known as psychohistory. Using the law of mass action, it can roughly predict the future on a large scale. Hari Seldon predicts the demise of the Galactic Empire and creates a plan to save the knowledge of the human race in a huge encyclopedia and also to shorten the barbaric period expected to follow the demise from 30,000 years to 1,000 years. A select people are chosen to write the Encyclopedia and to unknowingly carry out the plan to re-create the Galactic Empire. What unfolds in this book and in the books that follow is the future history of the demise and re-emergence of a Galactic Empire, written as a series of adventures, in a similar fashion to the Star Wars series.

Even though this is arguably the greatest set of Science Fiction novels ever written, I do not recommend it to those who are only mildly interested in Science Fiction. Character development is not the focus of these novels and the large amount of technical/scientific details, schemes and plots can become both confusing and heavy for the unitiated Science Fiction reader. If you read this one you will feel the need to read the others which may take a long time. If you are new to Science Fiction start with something lighter and when you are hooked you can continue with this series. Also, in my opinion the second and third books were better than the first.

The Foundation Series is the biz
By DavidLG1971
Asimov had an active and brilliant imagination - truly, a scientist writing fiction. This series is science fiction on a grand scale. When you keep in mind that this story originated in 1951, it is easy to see how much Star Trek, Star Wars and yes even Heinlein's & Clarke's later works borrowed from these ideas.

Anyway, Asimov at his best was a creator; he had amazing ideas of the universe, how it worked, and how to structure stories that manipulated the readers expectations.

The Foundation series is like a spider web that continues to become more intricate and complex with each chapter. The intricacy of the plotting is amazing, although honestly it's not self-evident in the first few stories of the first novel, given that they were published independantly, as serialized short stories told one at a time.

Only with the second book did this change.

The basic premise: The rise and fall of the roman empire, told on a galactic scale from a historian living in the 2nd empire a thousand years later.

The setup: One man creates a science, called Psychohistory, a fictional precursor to Chaos Math (a real statistical science today). This psychohistorian, Hari Seldon, predicted that the vast Galactic Empire is about to crumble, dropping humanity back into the dark ages. This dark ages was due to last 30,000 years (I believe), and while it is too late to prevent this horrible breakdown of society, Seldon believes he can use this new math to shorten the time period between empires.

To do so, he establishes two "Foundations" made up of scientists, one at the outer edge of the galaxy, and the other at "Star's End". In advance, Seldon plots out the future (using the math of psychohistory), and sets in motion a series of "domino" events. The Foundation faces crises and problems, forcing change in both strategy and focus for the next several hundred years. But Asmimov continues to modulate the story throughout each of the books, and building upon the previously-understood structure.

In fact, once you think you've read enough permutations on the same idea, Asimov starts tearing the structure down, introducing variables into the story that further complicate matters.

A caveat about the most often-touted complaint about Asimov: His writing style (or lack thereof):

In 1951, when these stories were first published, Asimov was not a great writer - as in, a writer of literature. His descriptions, characterizations and storytelling technique all left a lot to be desired. His technique got better with the passing years, such that any of his fiction written after 1970 or so reads easily.

But that is not the point, here. Asimov didn't create great characters (save for his robot stories) - he came up with mind-bending ideas and subsequent permutations.

The litmus test of whether or not Asimov is for you: Read 'The Last Question'. It's a 12-page short story. Not brilliantly written, but a fantastic story with amazing ideas contained inside. When you get to the last sentence of it, you will probably be blown away. If you are, Foundation is for you.

Read them - and commit to all of them, because they get better as they go, generally speaking. The first three were written in 1950 - 53. But the fans demanded that he someday continue the story, so he continued with a fourth book in 1983, and the last in 1986. Some complain that the last book is overlong - and I agree - but the last sentence of the last book is...amazing.

The books:

Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation (contains the best story - Search By The Mule)
Foundation's Edge (best overall book)
Foundation and Earth

Afterward, Asimov went back and wrote prequel novels (Prelude to Foundation, Foundation's End) taking place prior to and concurrently with events from the first book. He later admitted that he wrote prequels because the main story had gotten so complicated, he felt he'd taken the story as far as it could go.

The prequels aren't too bad, but they are completely non-essential.

Fifty Degrees Below, by Kim Stanley Robinson

Bestselling, award-winning, author Kim Stanley Robinson continues his groundbreaking trilogy of eco-thrillers–and propels us deeper into the awesome whirlwind of climatic change. Set in our nation’s capital, here is a chillingly realistic tale of people caught in the collision of science, technology, and the consequences of global warming–which could trigger another phenomenon: abrupt climate change, resulting in temperatures...

When the storm got bad, scientist Frank Vanderwal was at work, formalizing his return to the National Science Foundation for another year. He’d left the building just in time to help sandbag at Arlington Cemetery. Now that the torrent was over, large chunks of San Diego had eroded into the sea, and D.C. was underwater.

Shallow lakes occupied the most famous parts of the city. Reagan Airport was awash and the Potomac had spilled beyond its banks. Rescue boats dotted the saturated cityscape. Everything Frank and his colleagues in the halls of science and politics feared had culminated in this massive disaster. And now the world looked to them to fix it.

Whatever Frank can do, now that he is homeless, he’ll have to do from his car. He’s not averse to sleeping outdoors. Years of research have made him hyperaware of his status as just another primate. That plus his encounter with a Tibetan Buddhist has left him resolved to live a more authentic life.

Hopefully, this will prepare him for whatever is to come....

For even as D.C. bails out from the flood, a more extreme climate change looms. With the melting of the polar ice caps shutting down the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, another Ice Age could be imminent. The last time it happened, eleven thousand years ago, it took just three years to start.

Once again Kim Stanley Robinson uses his remarkable vision, trademark wry wit, and extraordinary insight into the complexity between man and nature to take us to the brink of disaster–and slightly beyond.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Earth continues its relentless plunge toward environmental collapse in Robinson's well-done if intensely didactic follow-up to Forty Signs of Rain (2004). As a result of global warming, the Gulf Stream has stalled, and when winter comes, impossibly frigid temperatures hit the Eastern Seaboard and Western Europe. As people starve, multinational corporations explore ways of making a profit from the disaster. When Antarctica's ice shelves collapse, low-lying island nations quite literally slip beneath the rising waters. In Washington, D.C., clear-sighted scientists must overcome government inertia and stupidity to put into effect policies that may begin to salvage the situation. An enormous fleet of ships is dispatched to the North Atlantic to dump millions of tons of salt into the ocean in the hope of restarting the Gulf Stream. This ecological disaster tale is guaranteed to anger political and economic conservatives of every stripe, but it provides perhaps the most realistic portrayal ever created of the environmental changes that are already occurring on our planet. It should be required reading for anyone concerned about our world's future.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Picking up where Forty Signs of Rain (Bantam, 2004) leaves off, this second book in a planned trilogy finds Earth about to experience the most intense winter on record. Governments worldwide blithely go about their routines in spite of the monumental recent flooding in Washington, DC, and other areas around the globe. When the record-setting cold sets in, people begin freezing to death and starving due to crop failures. Large corporations and world governments use the crisis to attempt to rig elections and plan other agendas to tighten their hold on the public. Meanwhile scientists, especially those at the National Science Foundation, frantically search for a way to shift the weather patterns. The answer seems to be to jump-start the Gulf Stream to get it flowing again; the world watches as millions of tons of salt pour from ships into the ocean in this attempt. While the major plot of ecological chaos plays out, the subplots show how the effects of the weather changes, ecological turmoil, and governmental and big business assaults affect the various characters as they try to survive. This well-researched and expertly written novel about a future that might be coming true all too soon will hopefully serve as a wake-up call about Earths current serious situation.–Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Robinson, award-winning author of the Mars trilogy, turns his attention away from space and toward Earth. Critics weren’t too sure what to make of the second of this eco-thriller series. If it was a plea to take action to combat global warming, few were certain that Robinson saw "big science" as the obvious answer and suspected that he had something else up his sleeve for the third book. But readers won’t miss the obvious point about global warming, government, technology, and science—though a moralizing air, out-of-context details, and distracting subplots raised some critics’ eyebrows. The London Times even warned that this novel was "nigh on unintelligible" unless you’d read the first book. Since Robinson’s scenario really could happen, you’d better read up.

better than the first installment
By Mike Garrison
This is the second book in a trilogy, or perhaps the second part of a three book novel. (More on that later.) It works better for me than the first installment (Forty Signs Of Rain) because it is a lot more focused.

Where the first book followed a bunch of mostly-separated stories about a bunch of mostly-separated characters, this one concentrates on a single character, Frank Vanderwal. Some of the other characters from the first book are also covered in a secondary way, but Frank is the center of the story. (Leo is completely absent. Charlie and Anna are sometimes used as viewpoint characters, but quite sparingly.)

Some of the author's longtime fascination with Tibet shows up in a secondary storyline, but the major plot thread details Frank's attempt to live homeless in the middle of Washington DC as a "modern forest primate". This is complicated by a severe winter that is brought on by global climate change. It is contrasted by an examination of what happens when the zoo animals that were released during the flood of the previous book end up "going feral" and trying to survive in the now-wrecked Washington city parks.

Frank is also the focus of domestic surveillance operations, and Robinson presents an image (which is quite possibly true) of a society where domestic high tech spying is rampant and extends even to people who live "off grid" as much as possible. (The headlines in US papers this week are about the NSA performing illegal domestic spying, so perhaps this was a timely subject for fiction!)

He also discusses the idea of letting science replace politics as a method for keeping society running. Those familiar with Robinson's other works will recognize this idea. He likes to come up with new systems of economics and government, which he then uses as the background for a story about his characters. Many of these focus on "market failures" in the current capitalism/democracy system that is in place in the West. Climate change is a well-known market failure scenario, and fits in well with Robinson's political interests.

In the book, Charlie's boss Phil Chase decides to run for president against the unnamed but very Bush-like Republican incumbent. This is a small story in the book, but it is thematically important to the idea that "business as usual" just isn't working.

Frank also finds himself somewhat torn between a possible romantic involvement with his boss, Diane, and an on-going relationship with the mysterious woman he met while stuck in an elevator at the end of the first book.

The bottom line is that this book reads better than the first one. It has a focus, a more definite storyline, and a better feeling of completeness -- even though it is obviously not a complete novel.

Which brings me back to a complaint about this series and several other recent fiction series that I have read. When did it go out of fashion to publish complete novels? More and more it seems that novels have grown to the point that partial novels are being released as "parts of a series". That has its place in some stories, but in most of them (as in this one) it breaks up the story too much and weakens it overall. I think this "series" would have better if it had been a more tightly composed single book, about two thirds the length of the total trilogy.

On Bureaucracy
By David G. Phillips
The second book in a trilogy on catastrophic global climate change. '50 Degrees' starts off where '40 Signs ' left off, Washington D.C. and much of the eastern seaboard has emerged from the deluge and clean-up ensues. This book, like its predecessor, is a book about bureaucracy and governmental infighting. Despite the writing on the wall the government and the NSF have a difficult time gaining any sort of traction on changing the status quo and leading the nation into reversing climate change and establishing some sort of carbon sequestration.

The character Frank plays the main protagonist in this book, he emerges from the deluge homeless and decides to go feral much like the Washington DC zoo animals had done during the rain storm. He lives in a tree house and tries to survive in the park even though temperatures are changing drastically after the thermohaline stall of the Gulf Stream. Much as the book suggests, temperatures reach 50 degrees below and many cities are woefully unprepared for it.

Much like the first book, this one spends the first 2/3rds taking us through the bureaucratic infighting between DoD and DoE versus the NSF and EPA amongst others. The last third involves the response to temperature change and the mini ice-age that looks imminent after the West Antarctic ice-shelf begins to separate. Along with this, Robinson tangentially discusses a secret governmental conspiracy to steal elections (a la Diebold) & warantless spying on Americans. This book is sure to make conservatives cringe and could be the anti 'State of Fear' Michael Chricton screed.

It's a fine book & Robinson is a very talented writer, I just wish he would focus less on the Tibetan obsession and stick to the weather. A good book, I plan on reading the final novel, but I think it could have been much better featuring more of the weather / governmental conspiracy angle.

The Suspense, It Burns!
By Amazon Customer
I'm giving this only three stars, not for the writing, but for the serial nature of the two books so far in this trilogy.

Like the first book, this one has a lot to offer. Rapid climate change continues apace, and Robinson's scientists and politicians grapple with the effects as they work as involved professionals on the problem. Imagining Minnesotan winter temperatures in Washington DC is a powerful way to bring home how climate change could day-to-day life. The characters are touching and human, and their relationships with each other are as important as their relationship with the weather.

But for Pete's sake... the two books published so far aren't novels, they're the first two-thirds of a novel. They're not long enough nor dense enough to be satisfying as individual stories. The Mars trilogy, another trilogy by Robinson which followed a set of characters for three books, covered centuries of events in over two thousand pages; the first two books of this trilogy, by contrast, have the same page count as the last book of the Mars trilogy and span events over roughly a year, and even at that they seem a little padded with a lot of lunches and phone calls and searches for parking spaces. Worst of all, this book ends with another big 'To Be Continued...' placard.

It's praising with faint condemnation when a reader's principal frustration with book is that there isn't more of it, but still, be aware that whatever appetites were aroused by _Forty Signs of Rain_ won't be satisfied here. I remain optimistic about the end of the story, but I sure wish I didn't have to wait another year to read it.

I, Jesus: An Autobiography, by Chuck Missler, William Welty

Many people who knew Jesus understood him well enough to admire him, to respect him, and to love him. Others were terrified of him. Some of his own relatives said he was out of his mind. But the politically and religiously intolerant leaders of first-century Israel hated him. So they murdered him. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Not by a long shot.
Today, more than twenty centuries later, respected Bible scholars Dr. Charles “Chuck” Missler and Dr. William Welty bring Jesus of Nazareth to you in the most unconventional way possible…by bringing Jesus of Nazareth to talk in his very own words about himself, his purpose, his nature, and his mission.
By the time you’ve finished reading I, Jesus: an Autobiography, you’ll have learned why this rabbi from Nazareth rose from literal obscurity—as well as from the grave—to change the very course of history.

Amazon.com Review
Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He just wants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all the other animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual Jungle Dance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird." Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, and warthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glum giraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon he is prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricket accompanist). In the vein of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Gerald's fickle "friends" quickly decide he's worthy of their attention again.

With this rhyming, poignant (in a cartoonish way) tale, Giles Andreae, author of Rumble in the Jungle, and numerous other picture books, shows insecure young readers that everyone can be wonderful, even those that march to the beat of a different cricket. The rhymes are somewhat awkward, but the bold, bright watercolors by Guy Parker-Rees will invite readers to kick up their heels and find their own internal harmony. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
All the jungle's got the beat, but Gerald the giraffe has four left feet. Such is the dilemma in this British team's bouncy if didactic picture book about self-esteem. As a multitude of fleet-footed beasts eagerly "skip and prance" at the annual Jungle Dance in Africa, Gerald feels sad "because when it comes to dancing/ he was really very bad." Jeered by waltzing warthogs and cha-cha-ing chimps when he attempts to cut a rug, Gerald hangs his head and leaves the celebration behind. Luckily, a friendly cricket appears in the moonlight, chirping a morale-boosting song of self-confidence that soon sets Gerald in graceful motion. Andreae's rhyming text has a jaunty rhythm that's likely to spark interest in the read-aloud crowd, in spite of a heavy-handed message. Parker-Rees's kicky depictions of slightly anthropomorphic animals boogying on the dance floor are the highlight here. His watercolor and pen-and-ink artwork exudes a fun, party vibe. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal
reS-K-A clumsy giraffe is instantly transformed into an exceptional dancer when he finds music that he loves. Gerald has tall, thin legs, which are good for standing still, but when he tries to run, his crooked knees buckle. At the annual Jungle Dance, he is laughed off the floor. A cricket tells him that "-sometimes when you're different you just need a different song." This advice enables the lonely creature to dance, much to the amazement of the other animals. The rhythmic text follows a pattern of four lines per stanza. Some rhyme and others do not. Some flow smoothly; others are forced. One line states that, "He threw his arms out sideways-." Huh! Giraffes don't have arms. Full-page color illustrations done in pen and ink and watercolor are bold and warm. Characters are whimsical and expressive, but they don't make up for the drastic and unbelievable turnaround that takes place upon hearing the cricket play his violin. For stories about individuality, stick with Helen Lester's Tacky the Penguin (1988) and Three Cheers for Tacky (1994, both Houghton) or Robert Kraus's Leo the Late Bloomer (HarperCollins, 1971) and Owliver (Prentice-Hall, 1974; o.p.).

There is a reason this book is a top seller!
By KC
There's a reason this book is a top seller, it's adorable! I first read this book in a toddler book club when I was a nanny, I now read this book to my own children. I have read this book probably a hundred + times (not an exaggeration) and I still love it. I haven't found a child who didn't like this book, it's so cute. Great story, nice colorful illustrations. I highly recommend this book!

Great Book, Esepcially for Kiddos with Special Needs
By Andy
I'm going to side with every other member of this book's fan club. I bought his because I have a beautiful little boy who has some very specialized challenges, and I loved the message this book sends...that you can be different, you can even not be good at certain things in other people's eyes, but there can still be something beautiful only you can contribute. And I want my son to know and to hear that message that just like Gerald the Giraffe, he's got a very special dance that he'll be able to do. And I want him to be able to see that it's possible too, because I know sometimes it can be hard, especially when you're in therapy all the time and therapy is all about what's not going well and what's not going like normal, so I truly think this book has great value especially for kiddos who may struggle to do things the way other people "normally" do. It sends a very nice "yes you can" message, and I love it.

The Chicken and the Quetzal: Incommensurate Ontologies and Portable Values in Guatemala's Cloud Forest, by Paul Kockelman

In The Chicken and the Quetzal Paul Kockelman theorizes the creation, measurement, and capture of value by recounting the cultural history of a village in Guatemala's highland cloud forests and its relation to conservation movements and ecotourism. In 1990 a group of German ecologists founded an NGO to help preserve the habitat of the resplendent quetzal—the strikingly beautiful national bird of Guatemala—near the village of Chicacnab. The ecotourism project they established in Chicacnab was meant to provide new sources of income for its residents so they would abandon farming methods that destroyed quetzal habitat. The pressure on villagers to change their practices created new values and forced negotiations between indigenous worldviews and the conservationists' goals. Kockelman uses this story to offer a sweeping theoretical framework for understanding the entanglement of values as they are interpreted and travel across different and often incommensurate ontological worlds. His theorizations apply widely to studies of the production of value, the changing ways people make value portable, and value's relationship to ontology, affect, and selfhood.

Review
"This is a big book, speaking to the hard and intractable questions about the distinctions between the particular and the universal, the private and the public, and the intimate and the ultimate. Insofar as philosophy has tried to understand the human condition as bridging the mental and physical world, Paul Kockelman's book is one of the boldest things out there. I love this book and its analytical project. Anthropology needs something like this, now." (Bill Maurer, author of How Would You Like to Pay? How Technology Is Changing the Future of Money)

"The Chicken and the Quetzal is a masterpiece. Paul Kockelman’s finely grained ethnography of an ecotourism NGO in Guatemala's highlands opens up new ways to think about meaning, value, ontology, ecology, development, indigenous studies, and more. A broad audience from advanced undergraduates to specialists will benefit from the insights of one of our generation's most rigorous and original thinkers presented in beautifully written prose. The Chicken and the Quetzal has the power to make one see the world in a different way." (Julia Elyachar, author of Markets of Dispossession: NGOs, Economic Development, and the State in Cairo)

"The Chicken and the Quetzal is exemplary of semiotic ethnography, a thriving genre in linguistic anthropology that details much more than the linguistic aspect of social life.... Its theoretical contribution to linguistic anthropology is significant, and it offers an invitation to dialogue with other ways of doing anthropology and social science.... I encourage you to read the book, to respond, and so to generate the value that the semiotic process produces, coined in the currency of social relationality." (Christopher Ball Anthropological Quarterly 2016-06-01)

I must’ve read the summary for this book too quickly before requesting it. I assumed that as the cover promised it would detail the birds of Guatemala from the chicken to the quetzal… So, I was a bit hard-hit by the academic “Introduction” that reads like the first part of a dissertation because it laboriously summarizes the concepts, terms, and all major research in the field of eco-tourism and at-length summarizes what will be discussed in each of the coming chapters, despite the relative brevity of the book as a whole. As a thesis would, the first chapter then summarizes the history of eco-tourism in the central region of Guatemala. The usual academic pattern is broken in a section called “Priming the Ecotourism Experience,” where questions such as: “What are the tour and the accommodations like [at the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal]?” and “How do we get there?” are answered. “In the ecotourism program you will travel to see and experience the cloud forest and learn about the life and culture of the Q’eqchi’ people living near the forest. Your accommodations in a typical Q’eqchi’ home are rustic. Their homes are constructed with wood walls and dirt floor, and there is an open fire inside the home over which your food will be cooked” (28). Note, that his food was cooked for him… I doubt some that can cook will not be allowed to volunteer to help these extremely impoverished Guatemalans. Kockelman has a section later in the chapter on “Immaterial Labor, Incommensurate Values, and Intersubjective Intentions” and uses Marxist and Kantian terms to explain these but in the spirit of ecotourism, I doubt hard labor is the point of touring an ecologically beautiful environment. Chapter 2 is dedicated to “poultry.” Kockelman explains that the “local ways of framing the relation between women and chickens” frame the key themes of this section, “ontology (what kinds of entities there are in the world), affect (cognitive and corporeal attunements to such entities), and selfhood (relatively reflexive centers of attunement) (52). This is another typical critical trick. Kockelman starts with a basic emotional subject or the archetype of farming and chicken raising by small family units. The book is about ecotourism, but instead of exploring the environmental solutions and complications of the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal program, the author digresses from the concrete chicken to the chicken as a surreal entity. Just as feces is feces, a chicken is a chicken. The chicken has been introduced to the region five hundred years ago, as Kockelman points out. Thus, the chicken or how the chicken is raised by women in this region are not questions of deep rooted ancient culture that needs to be preserved. If the chicken is still a nutritious and economical good for the locals, this domestic industry should continue. If parrots can legally be traded today and they can make the locals more money, they should switch to caring for this commodity. But, even if the chicken and the love between the Guatemalan women and their chickens must be protected, the criticism should not diverge into mythology or theology in a discussion of the “corporeal” and the “entities” of the “world.”
I do not recommend reading this book to eco-tourists or to ecologists because it is likely to frustrate and confuse both.

Intimate Politics: Publicity, Privacy and the Personal Lives of Politicians in Media Saturated Democracies (Contemporary Political Communic

It is often remarked that politicians’ private lives are becoming a feature of political communication in many advanced industrial democracies. However, there have so far been no genuinely comparative studies examining the personalized nature of political communication. Intimate Politics provides for the first time a systematic comparative analysis of such developments in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, it assesses the extent to which the private lives of politicians have become a feature of political communication in each democracy. The book provides a comprehensive account of the shifting boundaries between the public and private, and whether any developments are universal or more advanced in some democracies than others, and seeks to explain why this might be. Intimate Politics will be of great value for students and scholars of communication and media studies and political science and is required reading for anyone who wants a fuller understanding of the transformation of mediated politics in advanced industrial democracies.

OK, But Misses the Point
By not a natural
James Stayner's Intimate Politics has a suggestively lurid cover that could easily mislead prospective readers as to the nature of his book. Intimate Politics is definitely not written for the broadly intelligent casual reader, whether or not he or she is looking for something sensational. Instead, this book is an exercise in determinedly rigorous scholarship aimed at understanding variability in journalistic coverage of both innocuous and salacious personal characteristics of political figures in the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Australia. The author's C.V., posted elsewhere on line, makes clear that, so far, he has based his academic career largely on research regarding what he refers to as the "intimization" of politics from one nation to another.

As a result, he is able to present detailed accounts of ways in which journalistic political discourse has reduced politics to the personal traits and private behavior of conspicuously political people in those nations with which he is familiar. Stayner writes well, and some of his accounts, including the sexual misadventures of Bill Clinton, Jean Sarkozy, and Gerhard Schroeder are on point and reasonably interesting. The same is emphatically true of his brief coverage of Angela Merkel's temperate and intelligent response to tabloid photo-journalists' execrable intrusion into her perfectly innocent down-time, when she was just trying to relax and get some exercise to help deal with her high-stress job.

Snyder's use of simple descriptive statistics and graphs is, for the most part, informative. It does, however, inadvertently call attention to the fact that his efforts to understand the distribution of the "intimization" or personalization of political life, while aimed at identifying relationships of universal applicability, are based on only seven cases, the nations listed above. Inevitably, given so few cases, Stayner's quantitative displays have a much-to-do-about-very-little appearance, something that makes it a bit harder to take his work as seriously as he intends it to be.

Furthermore, one can only wonder if Stayner's work would have any relevance in important but socially and culturally very different countries such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan. Understandably, Stayner's cases were selected on the basis of convenience and the strengths and limitations of his own knowledge and research done by others. Issues of this kind are especially important with regard to the value of Stayner's causal models, in which he uses a relatively new, not widely understood statistical technique called Fuzzy set Qualitative Causal Analysis with a small collection of of more of less plausible independent variables to gauge levels of political "intimization" from one of seven nations to another.

It is at this point that the primary conceptual limitations of Stayner's research become evident. His explanation of "intimizaton" is, I think, premised on the accurate judgment that the politics of personality is inconsistent with the development of a political system that meets real needs, thus his references to the work of Richard Sennett and Hannah Arendt. However, he never explains why this might be the case, and how this might modify his selection of explanatory variables in his fuzzy set-based causal models.

It seems to me that we live in an age when political issues, whatever their nature or relative importance, are poorly understood or not understood at all, and the politics of personality has been given pride of place. Rather than limit his work to the cross-national comparative importance of "intimization," Stayner would do well to focus on nation-to-nation variability in the recognized importance of substantive issues, matters of health and well-being, life and death, construction or degradation, issues that make our lives better or worse rather than more or less titillating. Issues such as these are certainly measurable, though perhaps not as easily as the explanatory variables that Stayner uses, but once measured they could be readily inserted into his causal models.

As things stand, Stayner has given us some understanding of why politics is more or less personal or "intimized" in some places rather than in others. His work would be a lot more valuable, however, if he were able to explain why a TV-friendly personality, a pretty face, or a tough guy persona have become more important than demonstrated efficacy in dealing with important issues. That sort of information would help immensely in making politics once again a useful enterprise rather than an increasingly tiresome spectator sport.

Written for scholars
By Connie
James Stanyer's heavy research and analysis in this book make this book a very socio-scientific book to read. It's more vastly informative than it is entertaining and can be dry at times. For people interested in the power of the media, though, this is a worthwhile read.

The primary countries used are western European countries, where democratic societies rule and public access is open. The United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Spain and the United States are the primary countries profiled, countries in which the yellow press still likes to sell papers by revealing the most intimate or shocking disclosures of its politicians. Issues that seem to spark scandal are marital infidelities (which started in the early 1970s) and homosexual orientation. Interesting to note is the degree to which the European press delves into the private lives of its leaders. In Europe one's privacy is still very sacred and invasion of privacy a much more heinous crime than the infidelity or homosexual act itself. Another note is the depth of the scandal depends on the competitive market of the tabloid press: the more tabloid papers there are in any market, the more the press will delve into the privacy of its leaders. The United States and the United Kingdom seem to have similar inquisitive media while the other countries profiled tend to back off a bit more.

The second chapter, "Digging for Dirt," summarizes the research. The US press seems fixated on revealing infidelities much more than any other country, revealing our stuffy Puritan heritage Catholic countries, with their taboo on divorce, are much more accepting of marital infidelities than Protestant countries. How much is revealed of a politician's intimate life also depends on the extent of each country's legal privacy protection.

There are other avenues that Stanyer broaches. Some of the insights are revealing, others go into greater detail. What the final result is then is a scholarly book on the socio-political make-up of these European countries with the US and Australia. There are lots of graphs and citations for more depth.

Intimate Politics: All Democracies are not Created Equal
By Michael Griswold
It is often remarked that politicians' private lives are becoming a feature of political communication in many advanced industrial democracies.

What James Stanyer attempts to do in Intimate Politics is a comparative study of seven industrial democracies: The U.S., UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia to determine the extent that politicians personal lives have become a part of political communication. Without giving too much away, not all democracies are created equal. Some democracies have made politicians personal lives fair game, while other democracies still fiercely guard them, though this distinction is under question.

Stanyer's findings are quite interesting as his answers range from personal factors about individual candidates, political parties, laws on privacy and journalistic norms among others. Stanyer in a relatively brief study (170 pages) is able to produce a series of conclusions that are both easily understood and thought provoking. It is written with the rigor of an academic study, but there's nothing that should be overly intimidating to the non-academic reader considering purchasing this book.

A new and important entry into the literature on democratic politics and the media that should be read by the masses.
