The Art of the Novel: Critical Prefaces, by Henry James

This collection of prefaces, originally written for the 1909 multi-volume New York Edition of Henry James’s fiction, first appeared in book form in 1934 with an introduction by poet and critic R. P. Blackmur. In his prefaces, James tackles the great problems of fiction writing—character, plot, point of view, inspiration—and explains how he came to write novels such as The Portrait of a Lady and The American. As Blackmur puts it, “criticism has never been more ambitious, nor more useful.”

The latest edition of this influential work includes a foreword by bestselling author Colm Tibn, whose critically acclaimed novel The Master is told from the point of view of Henry James. As a guide not only to James’s inspiration and execution, but also to his frustrations and triumphs, this volume will be valuable both to students of James’s fiction and to aspiring writers.

Review
"Taken as a whole, this collection of James's prefaces constitutes the most profound manual of the art of fiction in the language." (Nation) "In this volume all the prefaces which Henry James wrote for the New York edition of his works have been brought under one cover. The result makes an indispensable item for every student or lover of Henry James and for all students of the novel, which James himself thought 'the most independent, most elastic, most prodigious of literary forms.'" (Commonweal) "As the story of a story, each preface has its dramatic interest, and those who have not read the stories in the light of each preface have missed half the enjoyment to be got from them." (Times Literary Supplement) "The prefaces James wrote for the New York edition open vast areas of light for discussion, areas which are central to how we work: how we choose what to narrate, for example; how we plot and plan in making art as a gift to our readers; how we make scenes and drama that matter; and the many other details on building foundations which will hold the rooms and corridors of the house of fiction." (Colm Toibin, from the new Foreword)"

The master on his mastery
By Shalom Freedman
Richard Blackmur in his introduction to this volume tells us that most of these prefaces were written for the famed 'New York Edition of his works. According to Lubbock," The labour was atorment, a care, and a delight, as his letters and the Prefaces themselves amply show. The thinking and the writing were hard and full and critical to the point of exasperation; the purpose was high, the reference wide, and the terms of discourse had to be conceived and defined as successive need for them arose. He had to elucidate and appropriate for the critical intellect the substance and principle of his career as an artist, and he had to do this, such was the idiosyncracy of his mind-specifically, example following lucid example with the consistency of mathematicl equation, so that in the Poetics, if his premises were accepted his conclusions must be taken as inevitable." p. vii

Blackmur says that criticism has never been more ambitious, or more useful. He cites James' definition of his task in his preface to 'Roderick Hudson'. "These notes represent over a considerable course the continuity of an artist's endeavor, the growth of the whole operative consciousness, and best of all, perhaps their own tendency to multiply , with the implication, thereby of a memory enriched'.

Among the prefaces included are those to 'Roderick Hudson' ' What Maisie Knew' 'The Princess Cassamissima' 'The Spoils of Poynton' 'The Altar to the Dead' 'The Tragic Muse'' The Lesson of the Master' ' The Aspern Papers' 'The Awkward Age''The Portrait of a Lady' ' The American'

James famous advice to the writer about ' trying to be one upon whom nothing is lost' certainly seems to apply to himself in his effort to understand and deepen the meaning of his own work both for himself and for his readers.

A Writers Bible
By Michael Hopkins
If you are a writer, a serious writer, and could only read one book to guide your craft, this would be it. James is not an easy read, but worth the effort. Dig in, think, practice, struggle, and watch your writing improve!
