Magnetic: The Art and Science of Engagement, by Anne Bergeron, Beth Tuttle

In this in-depth study of the role of engagement in helping organizations to succeed, Anne Bergeron and Beth Tuttle examine what they call "magnetic" organizations -- those that have developed an energized core centered on people, vision, and service, which enables them to attract and retain critical resources, such as talented and committed employees, loyal audiences, engaged donors, powerful goodwill from the community at large, and the financial capital required to sustain programmatic excellence and growth. These organizations have become "magnetic" by creating strong internal alignment around a compelling shared vision, and then extending the reach of their magnetic fields by engaging, serving and, ultimately, activating their internal and external communities through meaningful experiences and authentic relationships. Magnetic: The Art and Science of Engagement analyzes six American museums: Children's Museum in Pittsburgh; Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia; Conner Prairie Interactive History Park in Fishers, Indiana; The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia; Natural Science Center of Greensboro in North Carolina; and Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Each of these institutions has embraced a people and service-first ethic that has transformed their institutions into more vital, relevant and essential community assets. Magnetic provides a roadmap not only for strengthening museums and other cultural organizations, but for any business or nonprofit that seeks to deepen its relationships with and value to the customers and constituents it serves.

Review
"If you care about maximizing the meaning and means of your institution, Magnetic is not just a must-read, but a must-do operating manual for achieving your institution's passion, promise and purpose." - Robert H. Dedman, Jr., Former Chairman and CEO of ClubCorp International, Inc.

"Bergeron and Tuttle should be commended for this outstanding and timely book on the relationship between leadership, innovation, and sustainability. Nothing else exists that synthesizes these crosscurrents like Magnetic. This book will change not only the way cultural and other nonprofit leaders think about themselves, but will show how they can respond more creatively and effectively to the changing times, demographics and demands of their workplaces, audiences, and constituencies." - Kathy Kretman, Ph.D., Director, Center for Public & Nonprofit Leadership Georgetown University

"In pursuit of organizational success, we often overlook the basic inextricability of high performance and the ability to engage people in meaningful and authentic ways. Anne Bergeron and Beth Tuttle de-mystify the elusive concept of 'engagement' by breaking it down into its component parts and providing a roadmap to success using evidence-based, instructive tales that guide and inspire. Magnetic is magnetic itself -- a must-read for current and future arts and cultural leaders."
- Zannie Giraud Voss, Professor and Director, National Center for Arts Research, Southern Methodist University

"Museums and their leaders are at a turning point and Magnetic points the way forward. The book is eloquent, eclectic, useful, and courageous -- a rare and engaging formula for a business book.  I encourage cultural leaders, boards, staff, and anyone who cares about the future of museums to take the compelling six-principle Magnetic framework to heart."  - Julián Zugazagoitia, Menefee D. and Mary Louise Blackwell Director & CEO, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

“Magnetic is a must-do operating manual for achieving your institution’s passion, promise, and purpose.” (Robert H. Dedham chairman and CEO, ClubCorp International)

Museums @ a pivot point
By Mary Case
Magnetic: The Art and Science of Engagement
Jim Collins called it the "Power of And" Tuttle and Bergeron say it is "time for and." This book shows how some of Americas leading 'positive deviant' museums have become "high performance institutions with a superior ability to attract and retain the resources necessary to deliver sustained programmatic excellence and growth over time." And, it should be said, there are hundreds more on this path. As Phelan Fretz, Director of ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center, Burlington, VT said: "Just finished reading the first three chapters of Magnetic. The book is what Jim Collins never delivered for the nonprofits/museums industry: they have stock markets; for us, relationships are our commodity. A round of applause!"

Tuttle and Bergeron bring business leadership and organizational research and deftly apply their own deep knowledge of the museum landscape: why, where, and how does growth make sense? What about quality in our terms: collections, facilities, programs? How to create loyalty beyond reason. And the last line of their intro nails it: "...leadership matters, but empowering leadership matters most."

Museum tribes -- staff, boards, volunteers, grant makers, and those who love and visit us onsite and online-- need to read this book before November 28 this year so they can include Tuttle and Bergeron in their Thanksgiving blessings.

Outstanding information for organizational transformation
By PR Martin
This book tackles organizational transformation of museums in a manner that applies to any organization, particularly nonprofits. This inspired me to share with other organizational leaders to move our church to transform to be more involved with our community.

How did I luck out to find this at just the right moment?
By Kayla Gluck
Clear, beautifully written and documented, tons of ideas for anyone in any stage of working with or starting a not-for-profit organization. Concrete examples, check lists, a variety of institutions in a variety of locations. Unbelievably helpful...Ordered lots of extras to give to others involved in the same or similar projects.
