An excellent introduction for the home machinist
By JohnSays
Many long years ago I was the sole machinist for a company doing government mil spec work. I did one-off and prototype work with the occasional short production run. So when I say that this book is truly a great introduction for the home machinist, you can believe it. The author presents the information one needs to get around a drill press, lathe and milling machine. This is not an in-depth book however. When you finish it you will be aware of a great number of new things that may be worth following up on -- such as CNC. You will learn basic machine operations and what bits to use when and how. You will learn the language of machining. The key to learning any new subject is its language/nomenclature.

Where were you when I was 20?
By Amazon Customer
Although it has a title invoking a machine shop, every 20 year-old should have this book regardless of whether they dabble in a machine shop or not. Buy the book if you plan on ever buying or using a screw driver, hammer, drill, file, etc. Buy it for your son. I am considerably older than 20 and wish I had this book many years ago. It describes many of the tools and techniques I have used for years but it could have prevented mistakes and answered many questions. It is better to learn from a mentor (or this book) than to learn only from the school of hard knocks. I always wanted to know what a jobber drill bit was. I did not know that a Phillips screw is designed to cam out the screw driver when you have tightened it enough. I did not know what type of hammer to use to drive a chisel. (OSHA, please forgive me!) This is a fairly good read taken in spurts but a fabulous reference book to keep near the garage, wood-shop, hobby shop, basement, and yes, your machine shop. It is not perfect but well worth the money. And check out Frank Marlow's other books Machine Shop Know-How -- The Tips & Techniques of Master Machinists.

Info you need and none you don't
By G-Money
As a beginner machinist this was exactly the book I was looking for. It's current (most machining books seem to have been written in the 50's) so it covers things like tool inserts but it also covers basics like setting tool height on a lathe. It was actually pleasant enough to read that I read the whole book in two days and even though I have several friends that are machinists and I've been around it for years I learned so much from this book.

The question and answer format is fine but it's the way the information is dolled out quickly and succinctly that is most appreciated. I learned what "climb milling" is and when it's useful even though I've been hearing the term for a while I never knew what it was (feeding with the tool cut instead of against) and it gives great rules of thumb like peck drill three times the depth of the diameter of the drill to start then for each diameter from then on. The basic depth for an end mill cut is 1/10th the diameter. These sort of things are just what you need to have a place to start from. Lots of tooling is explained too along with various setups and materials.

It's amazingly thorough and useful and not as outdated and dull as Machine Shop Practice. I wish there was a version 2 of this.
